Headgasket or Waterpump?

For those who dont wanna read it all: Thermostat changed, fluids flushed, car still overheats, waterpump and headgasket were "said to be done". Whats the problem?

Hey all. Ive been browsing this forum for a year before joining lol but yeah. I bought another prelude, a 98, stick, 125k miles about a month ago. The guy I bought it from said he did the timing, waterpump, headgasket, and a few little things. The day I bought it, it started snowing on the way back home from picking it up. Of course with my luck, I got stuck trying to go up a hill, but thought I could make it so I busted my ass trying to make it. I didnt. The car didnt reach above 6k rpms but i was on it pretty hard. Eventually I just pulled into someones driveway and picked it up the next day. Two weeks later my car started overheating. Changed the thermostat and flushed fluids and it ran fine for a week. Started overheating again yesterday, cant figure out why. What is this most likely? Could it be from romping on it during the snow storm?

The timing belt WAS done, had it confirmed. Dont know if the waterpump was but it should have if he did the timing. Is this a headgasket? Car burns all the oil within 2500 miles so I have to keep refilling..help please, I love my car and cant afford another one. :/

Not too car savvy, but can do alot of my own work. This is my second 5th gen, love them to death. What to do...lol. Thanks ahead of time.

Also, car idles low, tried taking IACV off and cleaning it but the hoses are literally stuck to it. What should I do to get them off without breaking the hoses lol.

Re: Headgasket or Waterpump?

Twist the hoses off the IACV at the base with a pair of pliers.

Is your coolant filled to the proper level? Is there any coolant in the oil or oil in coolant?

Re: Headgasket or Waterpump?

Yeah Ive filled it, let the bubbles escape, filled it up again, and then ran it, twice now.

Im pretty sure its not mixing, but yesterday when it overheated the antifreeze in the radiatoor was bjbbling and steamed when i opened the overflow but the overflow was cold. My radiator hoses were normal temp too..and thanks, ill try that tomorrow.

Maybe a faulty thermostat? I've had a 'bad' new one.

Re: Headgasket or Waterpump?

My rad cap made my radiator bubble and steam..since it could not raise the boiling temp. Sounds like the same problem..give it a shot like 10 dollars at oriellys..

Re: Headgasket or Waterpump?

t-stats do tend to be broken out of the box. they probably get dropped far too often. i was going to suggest the oil cooler gasket for the loss of oil, but after reading that you lose coolant too... not sure. i had an overheating issue and thought it was the water pump but it turned out to be a small hailine crack in the head where oil was forced into the waterjackets, clogging up my coolant with caramel. lets hope for the best

Re: Headgasket or Waterpump?

Is your radiator good? Might be the radiator. If you see from the outside that it`s very old it could possibly be. You can start your car and take of the radiator cap and put your palm on it to see if it has pressure. MAKE SHER YOUR CAR IS COLD and NOT WARMED UP.

Re: Headgasket or Waterpump?

Alright yeah, thanks guys, Ill post tomorrow when I get back to working on it. But the radiator wasnt losing fluid, I just topped it off after letting the bubbles escape. My mechanic said the same thing about the thermostat being broken out of the box, so Ill probably try that too.

As for the radiator, it hasnt been replaced but it looks like it has been taken care of pretty well. Im just real concerned that it could be the headgasket, even though the guy said he did the work on it Im not sure if he did or if I just fked it up lol..

Re: Headgasket or Waterpump?

Always tough believing what someone says when selling a vehicle, without hard proof it is best to go with the idea that he did not do any work on it. (doesn't mean it is the problem). But let us know what you find out. but if your radiator is bubbling over and steaming out the resevoir. (with cap on) your rad cap is not raising the boiling pressure.

Re: Headgasket or Waterpump?

It wasnt steaming out the reservoir, but when I took the cap off the reservoir the hose had steam coming out of it like it was coming from the radiator. That only happened once though. The radiator hasnt bubbled since then. I didnt have time today to try changing the thermostat again but hopefully I can get to it tomorrow before work.

^^good point, he wasnt all that legit and I told him when I was on my way up there that I had already sold my car so he kinda knew I was in a tough spot because I needed a car right away.
