Suspension Clunk

I had an '01 Prelude I sold years ago, it had a clunk that came from the right rear when driving over a bump (most noticeable when it was cold out). I figured it was just that car. I just bought another '01, and it has the SAME clunk in the back rear corner. WTF?

Re: Suspension Clunk

I'm having the same issue. Mine clunks on both sides but the right is much more noticeable. I think its worn out bushings, more specifically the inner one's on the lower control arm.

Re: Suspension Clunk

Get under the car while it's on jack stands and move around the swaybar endlinks - push/pull up and down/ left and right really hard. If you have a sound then you need new endlinks.

While the car is jacked up - grab the wheel and try to shake it left/right/up/down as hard as you can. If it has any play/knocking then you need a new wheel bearing.

Remove the wheel and pull/push near the upper and lower balljoints to see if they have any play.

Check that your tophats are bolted down tightly

Check the tophat shock mount and see if it's broken (this requires removing the trunk liner).

Check the bushings visually from under the car - you can tell by looking at them if any need to be replaced.

Sway bar end links checked good. Car only has 78K miles, I'd be surprised if the wheel bearing were worn out.

I was not aware of the TSB, thanks for the post. I'll look into it. That would explain why it's worse when it's cold out, since the "compressed" dampers become stiffer with cold temps.

Re: Suspension Clunk

90% of the time that's the problem, which really isn't an issue IMO. It's only the bigger bumpers, other than that you never notice it.
