trans paint

i got a types im painting and getting ready 2 install in my base....i kno, dont worry about that.....i recently painted my trans with 3 coats of primer n 3 coats of engine enamel. primer n enamel r both rated 4 500 deg. i already painted it and understand that its not like exterior auto paint, you have a recoat window and you cant recoat after you leave the project because itll wrinkle er whatever....im plannin on using high temp clear on the engine...but my question is am i able 2 clear the trans after its been sitting for 2 days or is that a bad idea??? heres some pics of my progress.....

Re: trans paint

I just did this as well using the Dupli-color high temp aluminum spray. Fortunately, I had enough time to apply 3 coats primer, 4 coats paint and 2 coats of clear all in the same day.

I do believe the directions say to wait 7 days (if an hour or more has passed) for the paint to fully cure before adding the clearcoat.

I have been impatient with projects before and applied the clear coat the next day and had no problems. If you have the time, wait the week, just in case it affects long term.

looks good by the way.

Re: trans paint

^ dido. This is something I would love to do but don't want to drop the tranny to just paint it. Plus I will admit Im pretty bad when it comes to painting. I just dont have the patients to wait till it completely cures. My advice would be to wait it out as long as possible. Too many times I had to redo the paint because it didn't completely dry. And let me tell you while your stripping all paint off to restart you aren't thinking pretty thoughts. ha. Well best of luck to you so far it looks great.

Re: trans paint

I haven't installed my tranny or other parts yet, I'm waiting to pull the block and paint that as well. miscellaneous brackets that I have painted in the past have turned out and held up fantastic. The key is to let the paint and clearcloat completely cure for at least a week before installation. at least that has been true in my case.

I can tell you that the regular automotive clearcoat by duplicolor yellows and looks like crap. I used it on my engine bay the first time, and now I am disgusted everytime I open the hood...lol

Re: trans paint

haha, I'm ordering some OEM paint and clear this next time around so hopefully it will hold up.

Are you going to spray the block so it matches?
