Icon9 Help 98 Going down the drain fast.

Hello People. I'm new to this. I need to figure something out with my 98 auto prelude fast. I have a feeling my trannie is slipping. It will start out 0 to 20mph and then rev for a short amount of time then kick into gear. It ends up doing this when i stop and go. & let me tell you cali drivers don't understand the meaning of cruzin. Its been doing this since i bought the car (1 year & 8 months). I bought it from a friend of a friend, & didn't know any better. Kind of wished; I didn't trust the friend as much & didn't fall in love with the car. In this time I had the 02 censors changed, and some other work done. Don't remember what. Ohh yeah, If I didn't have friends at the smog only place it wouldn't of never passed. The engine light has never gone and stayed off. The last thing the mechanic told me is that there is something to do with the valves in the engine, That they need to take it apart and clean out the crud. When i heard the cost at that time I just stopped listening. I need to figure out where to start, in either fixing it for low cost. Because I am only 20 && theres no mommy & daddy to pay for anything. Or selling it for the most i can possibly get with every aftermarket product thats in the car and hopefully get an idiot that will pay. Well anyways. Lets get down to business, What is to be done next?

Kind of hard to point you in a direction without some clarification... How many miles are on your car? Is the CEL on right now? (couldn't understand if it is or isn't based on your description) Is the car idling rough? Any smoke out the exhaust? When and what was done on the last tune up?

The auto trans in the 5th gen is a known weak spot on our rides as you'll find out by searching around on it. If your CEL is on, start out by pulling the codes and then we can help a little more. If not, give us some more details so we can help.

Autozone should read the code for you for free. Most of the time it's going to be something emission related. As for the transmission slipping, you may want to try a fluid change. Don't go to a quick lube place. What type of aftermarket parts are on it?

Re: Help 98 Going down the drain fast.

This was the easiest questions for me to answer at the moment. I've been to autoZone and they told me they don't do that anymore.. Maybe the guy was being lazy or they really don't do it. I've got my oil changed roughly two months ago. Got the high mileage oil change. I finally learned to go somewhere else then them lube places. Just because I'm a lady, doesn't mean you're allowed to dick me around with my money. Sorry just makes me a little mad. Other words, He said the trannie oil was fine so he didn't want to touch it but did tell me to go get lucas transmission oil. So I did, It help for a bit, key word 'Bit.' ohh yeah emission problem sounds about right too..

Aftermarket; the main things I know of; Two subs in the trunk, touch screen stereo system, anti theft keyless entry (giving me a problem at the moment) Rims (not sure what size.) there's two other things but i've got no idea what they are called.

If you take pictures we could help you out more. To figure out what size your rims are you can look on the side of the tire and there should be some numbers, for example tires are 215/35/18; 18 is the rim size

There are way to many miles.. I'm thinking I should take a video before & when driving to make it easier for you to understand. Other then trying to explain bcuz I'm a novice when it comes to it. Can I post video's on here? CEL =Engine light? If so, then yes. Codes will take me a bit longer to try to get, meaning I have never found a mechanic I trust. && my guy friend who use to help with the car, is no where to be found.. Go figure. It doesn't seem to idle rough but, a while ago i heard a clunking when just sitting a noise you would hear from a very old mercedes diesel. It magically went away when He messed with something under the hood. It does smoke out the exhaust uncontrollably, it seems to be worse now because of winter. Before summer some guy at the lube place put something in it and made it idle for a long time. He told me i couldn't leave till, i guess, it calmed down on the smoking. Last tune up meaning oil change right???

Is there a way to post a video? Or is it better to take pictures?

you have to save the video or pictures to a hosting site like photobucket. then you can copy and post the URL of that pic or video here

Re: Help 98 Going down the drain fast.

the other video is still processing. -__-
Have you ever had a problem with something that acts up only when your around but when trying to fix the problem. You cant seem to catch the true problem on tape.. yup.. So the video processing is just strange.

Re: Help 98 Going down the drain fast.

First, that sucks that they don't read the code anymore. I left the states in June and I had the code read on my father in laws truck around then. It wasn't hard for them to go out and do it. Second, when I listened to the motor at first it sounded like loud fuel injectors, but when you go closer, it sounds like there is some issues with the valves. It's hard to speculate from a video and I don't want to send you down the wrong path. You may have some bent valves. I am unsure if the H22 is an inteference motor or not. Your car looks like it's cosmetically in good shape, is it worth it for you to get another motor? I could look for a motor out here in Japan and get some shipping quotes to help you out. There are a few preludes that I have taken some parts off already. It may be better for you to get a motor locally though too. At any rate. Find someone you trust who is knowledgeable about cars to go with you to a mechanic. I hope you get it figured out, aside from the motor stuff it looks like a pretty decent car. It has a lot of miles on it, but it also sounds like someone has been rough on it too. Oh, from what I see, aftermarket parts are injen air intake, spark plug wires, probably plugs too. The wheels are 18's like you said, +2 from the factory 16's. I didn't see anything else from the video. Good luck with your car.
