Icon14 Picked up a 97 SH for a steal...

Hey all, this is my first post on this board but I just picked up a new project car and figured this would be the place to talk about it. Seems like a pretty chill board which is cool ;-)

I found this SH at a used car lot here in Oklahoma and picked it up for $3300. 162K, interior is mint, a few minor dings here and the engine seems none the worse for wear. ATTS functions great, not throwing any codes, runs perfect.

My plans are building this car up straight NA, stock clean and slammed. Maybe some tasteful JDM upgrades to the exterior but I like a Prelude that looks clean. Not a big fan of body kits or chrome, but an extra clean minimalist approach to the look. Gonna start with getting her breathing a little better, DC header and a Thermal exhaust coming by the eom.

Here's a pic the day I brought it home.

I'll start a build thread soon... lookin forward to talkin with you guys

Re: Picked up a 97 SH for a steal...

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah I learned not to go cheap very early in this hobby.. I had over 12K sunk into my last project, an '00 Si, loved that car. Never should have sold it. Live and learn I guess.

Quick question for anyone who knows... is the Skunk2 IM compatible with the SH? I've got a buddy selling one NIB for $200 and all the info I've seen says 92-01 Ludes but not a peep about SH compatibility. A little help on that would be great.

Re: Picked up a 97 SH for a steal...

I've had good luck with DC's in the past... I'm not opposed to other options tho. Buddy of mine has a Megan set on his '99, nice welds just a little to cheap for my taste. Guess I could go for broke pay too much for no gain on a Mugen set lol

I like the way you talk, sounds like you're really going to keep her clean and simple on the outside. Love the color too, nice dark red.

The stock header is actually made very well. With most of the cheaper brands out there (DC, Megan, etc.) you're not going to see any difference in performance. Just stick with the stock ones until you can find someone who has a Hytech up for sale.

Re: Picked up a 97 SH for a steal...

Did you find that SH on Craiglist? I saw an SH going for $3950 at the Auto Factory. Looks like the same car :P I was gonna get it but I didn't have any money. Nice car though!

Btw, definitely don't do DC headers. Go all the way and get some nice Hytech reps. A lot of people start out by doing the I/H/E (Intake, Headers, Exhaust) and then going from there if they're doing an N/A build. However, I wouldn't drop any money in to an intake as the stock intake is already very effective. The only truly useful upgrade in the intake category would be a Type-S intake. (Correct me if I got the type wrong guys.)

Best of luck man with the build man! I live in Edmond, OK so if you ever wanna cruise, I'll be up in Tulsa on occasion playing concerts! :P

This. The stock prelude header isnt made like a civic header. DC or Megan headers are basically a direct oem replacement for our cars. No gains. If you do get a DC header for cheap chop off the collector and weld on a 2.5 inch collector so it will at least benefit you a little.

Re: Picked up a 97 SH for a steal...

Thanks for all the responses guys... I'm new to the world of Ludes, did a lot of Civic tuning but the H22 world is a whole different frontier. That's great advice on the stock header... I may pull the stupid hand protector off and wrap the stock header then; I think I have some spare header wrap laying around lol.

Ill take pix as I go. I'm in Tulsa btw. Not affiliated with Humble or Xtreme or Toyspeed or any of the clubs around here.. too much attitude for me; I just like to have fun with the stuff and not take it so seriously. This hobby is supposed to be fun, right? ;-)

If money isn't really a problem, consider getting Mugen exhaust and headers, with the OEM Type-S intake.

Re: Picked up a 97 SH for a steal...

I've thought about Mugen... seems a little pricey although my Thermal isn't exactly cheap. My budget on this build is $5000. First things first; the right rear strut is bad so I figure might as well do a full suspension overhaul to get things going.

I have an unopened set of S2 coilover sleeves and springs that I got in trade on some odds and ends--I'll slap those on when I swap out the OEM shocks/struts. I'm thinkin budget here so a set of KYB GR-2's or somethin. Of course camber will be an issue so there goes another 2-300 bucks. If I can stay under $800 on the suspension I'll be happy.

From what you guys are saying I'd be better off keeping the stock header and wrapping it, throwing a test pipe and cat back on and call it a day.

The biggest headache I have right now is that there's a pretty significant RMS leak and the cam seals are bad I'm sure. Might as well do the clutch while I've got the tranny dropped and water pump/timing belt/pulleys while I'm doin the cam seals. That'll probably take the better part of $800-$1000 to pull off.

The rest is just cosmetic really--a few small dings to pull out, change the headlights/tails, new paint for sure.. this thing has the 96-98 Honda clearcoat curse. I'll def stick with the factory color though--it looks nice imo. Slammed, clean, N/A, with some JDM interior stuff (gauge cluster, etc) and maybe a carbon OEM-look hood and I'll be happy. No Skyline conversions for me lol

if you're gonna replace the header and didn't want to spend more money on the power making exhaust manifolds....the only thing the after market 4-2-1 replacements have, is they weigh less. The welds on my ebay stainless steel header are just starting to rust, after a good 4 years of daily driving and racing. lower pipe is crushed , but my car still made just over 180whp on a dynojet dyno, with the ebay header

dont expect to get more power then, with h22 you have to rebuild almost whole engine all over again to get gains.. and parts cost

I would recommend that you should maintain your car to the top shape and then put rest of the money to good coilovers and cat-back system.
then you have raliable lude which is fun to drive.

Thanks for the input... my goal a reliable car that looks clean. The advice from everyone has been great! Just picked up some stock tails, installed today. Hated the altezzas. Buying the honeycomb front grille as well, thanks to this site. Here's a pic of the tails:

Re: Picked up a 97 SH for a steal...

I'm from OKC/Moore. Nice car you got there.

Listen to everyone here about headers, as you can actually lose hp by going cheap on them.
