Timing Belts, Water Pumps, and Cam Seals

Having just bought my first Prelude, my first car (20 years on 2 wheels later...) I knew it was going to be a steep learning curve. This forum has helped alot, thanks guys! Anyways, the first thing I learned was that without a service history and 160,000 km on the clock, there was no way of knowing what had been done and what hadn't, and I seemed to be going through ALOT of oil (about a litre every 5000 clicks) so I took the car in and had the timing belt, balance belt, water pump, cam seal and crank seal changed so I could sleep better at night. I was very glad I had when I got the old timing belt back which had been shaved down to half its original width by being badly installed I'm told. Another factor was the oil leak was from the seals above and oil was dripping down and degrading the belts so if it hadn't been dealt with I would of been looking at around $4000 repairs had the belt snapped, instead of the $700 it cost to change them. My only question is, is there anything else that could cause very expensive repairs if it breaks?

Your timing belt is probably one of the most important things in preventative maintenance. Give her a good tune up now; sparkplugs, wires etc. If by some chance you drive an auto...baby that tranny, they have been known to fail prematurely. other than that, just keep up with general maintenance, check your vacuum hoses, coolant hoses, etc.

Nice one, luckily it's a standard -already had slave cylinder changed so that's one part of that out of the way...
