Abnormal Brake Wear

Does anyone know why the top half of my brake pad only wears out and not the bottom half. It's happening on both sides since I changed the pads and rotors.

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

quite possibly, you put the pads with the little nubs on the wrong side. the side with the wear indicator, i believe, goes on the outside (also the one with out the little nubs). i had a similar issue a while back. that's what it was for me, i wouldn't even bother swapping them, just buy new ones.

Swapping what?

The ones with the wear indicator and nubs are on the piston side of the caliper. So do I flip it around then?

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

Either what beaker said, or the bottom slider is seized up and needs some lube.

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

swapping the pads around, from the inside to outside and outside to inside. the ones with the wear indicator should be on the outside. so it's easily visible.

Ok, I'll try that. I always seen it with the wear indicator pointed inward I figured so it wouldnt hit the caliper. I'm gonna pick of some more brake grease too.

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

i can't remember exactly what side the wear indicators went on. all i know is, those little nubs on the back face of the pad were contacting something that applies the breaking force to the pads causing uneven pressure. don't worry about the wear indicator so much, i could be wrong on that. if it does so happen that the wear indicator contacts the wheel, you can always cut it off though.

i wouldn't swap them though. you should just buy new ones. swapping them is not gonna fix the problem. you're still not gonna have complete calilper/pad contact so you won't have the full brake force. when i swapped mine, they still wore uneven.

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

Brake problems suck! After reading though id try what he said ^^. Get ahold of a "helms" shows you step by step for changing brake pads and all that. I was having strong wear on my rears a while back found out the e brake cable wasnt being released fully off the caliper system. A few weeks after fixing that the right rear piston seized "haha" >.> So a brand new caliper later and pads everything is good.

Ok I think I have it figured out. The Pad with the wear indicator goes on the side closest to me, the other goes on the other side of the rotor. Correct??

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

i could have sworn the wear indicators go on the inside. just make sure, when you're installing them, the caliper and piston sit flush on the pads and not touching any protrusions from the backside of the pads

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

i just checked my brakes on my way to work this morning and, unless i cut off the indicators, which i don't remember doing, they go on the inside. so i retract my first statement that they go on the outside so you can see them. there is no need to see them when you can hear them. if you're sure everything was installed right and there were no protrusions in the area where the pads and caliper/piston make contact then i have no ****in clue. i would just say get new pads and reinstall and try again.

there isn't really a visual external clue that a caliper is seized. friction is usually the first clue. jack 'er up and spin the wheel if you're not getting the right amount of friction. either it's gonna be to difficult or you won't get any friction. also uneven wear is an indicator. and by uneven i mean where one set of pads is wearing faster then the other 3 or 1 set of pads isn't wearing as fast as the other 3. decreased brake performance is a clue.

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

Thanks Beaker!

Yeah my Step father owns a tire shop, so I have it on a Lift. I tried putting my old pads back on( to see if that rust would go away) and so far its still there. all my other Rotors are fine just that driver side rear rotor. ill put the new pads back on and ensure they are on correctly. also recently I have been using the eBrake more, idk if maybe its sticking??. I have some caliper cleaner idk if I can use it to help?? ill try it thnx again

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

It could be your caliper is sticking.

The pad that has the little nipple on it goes on the inside of the wheel, and the completely flat pad goes on the outside.

You need to make sure you grease the sliders whenever changing your pads/rotors - a sticking slider can cause that issue as well.

LOL the flat pad on mine is the one with the wear indicator. so the one with the little nipples goes on the inside correct?

Re: Abnormal Brake Wear

The issue ended up being that the driver side caliper was seized and the passenger side pin was seized. Check both those.

Yes. The nipple is supposed to line up in the + crosses on the inside of the piston.

I bought a new caliper. They sell rebuild kits which are about 6 or 7 dollars but honestly I think it's a pain to do. With the pin I sprayed it with penetrating oil, let it sit for a while, and then just started pulling it out with some vice grips. Once I got it out I cleaned out the inside of the caliper bracket and lubed the new pin and inserted it. The boots a little hard to put on but a real tiny flat head helps. Make sure the pin slides in and out easily before you put it back together.
