Major problem

I was driving on the highway and my car just shut off. And when I tried to turn it over and it makes some kinda screeching noise from the starter area, I know its not the starter because it wouldnt make any noise? Would it be the alternator?

Re: Major problem

The starter wouldn't cause the car to shut off on the highway, but the alternator going bad would cause the car's voltage system to drain the battery and then shut off. To be sure you could pull the alternator off and take it into any autozone or advance auto parts store and they will check it for you. The screeching noise could indicate a problem with the starter though. One question, is the car dead , radio, headlights, etc? If it is, then it's more than likely the alternator. You may also want to check other vitals oil, coolant, trans fluid etc. The starting and charging system is something that is relatively easy to troubleshoot and repair most of the time.

Re: Major problem

Sounds like a possible timing problem. How many miles on the car and has the timing belt been replaced? A few years ago my 95 civic ex completely shut down at highway speed. Everything electrical was good, engine just would not run anymore. Turned out it ate its own timing cover gasket due to improper installation from previous owner. Cost me over $1300 with the valve job needed from jumping time.
So if your gauges started acting weird, or lights dimmed or anything like that before it died, than you're good. 95 percent chance it's your alternator. But if it just "shut down", especially if you heard any sort of odd engine sound (even for a split second), then i wish you the best of luck with your new rebuilt engine.

Re: Major problem

Well thats whats weird. Everything lights up fine like theres no electrical problem but I dont think it jumped timing, because I owned a car that did that on me one time and it didnt act like this one did when it just died out. Nothing really made any sounds or anything. Just kinda died. The check engine light came on and I own a computer to read the codes. Gonna try that, if I can find it.....
