Automatic question

I will be buying a 98 Lude for $700 or $800 from my good buddy. Mechanically, the only issue is the trans. She will only go reverse. He told me the trans was slipping and launching at higher RPMs. I'd like to go 5-speed, but my wife may drive it (I hope NOT) so I will keep it as an auto. The engine is a rebuild and has 25k hwy miles. The trunk and headlamps need replacement and a 'deer' dent needs to be fixed on the front pass. side. Minor rust on doors because we live around Chicago.

Only mods done are intake and exhaust, which is where I'd leave it for now. Body and paint will be next year.

This is a project car. As far as the transmission, is it usually just a overhaul kit to fix it? My neighbor is a mechanic and has all the tools to rebuild/replace and diagnose anything and labor is usually free.

Opinions/ideas appreciated!

Re: Automatic question

With a problem that severe, it could be a variety of problems...you need to get your neighbor or another mechanic to look through it in person and make that assessment.

Re: Automatic question

Honestly dude, with the amount of issues that the autotragics have; just do the 5speed swap. You're going to drop a good chunk of money into rebuilding that tranny, and all it's going to do is fail on your again. Scout out someone doing a part-out, and you'll probably get everything you need for less than $600.

Re: Automatic question

Is a swap fairly easy? I'm worried about interior issues, well I'm really unsure of everything I need with adding the shifter and do not want to be in over my head. I saw someone selling a 5spd tranny.

Any links showing exactly what is needed? I'm old with young kids so racing won't be on the top of my list. Maybe a close second. LOL

Re: Automatic question

If you are Illinois, maybe... Anyhow, what was involved, and how much for the entire swap? I found a 5spd for $375 and has 110k miles for sale. I'll start calling junk yards for parts.

Re: Automatic question

my 5spd swap ended up costing me around 2k. cuz while motor was out, i did timing belt, water pump, manual tensioner, valve adjustment, MANY oil seals, spark plugs, new clutch, light flywheel, new belts, and other nicknaks like new speedometer, shift boot, shift knob, oils, fluids and ETC.......... so believe me it wont be that cheap..... is it worth it? hellzzz yea, even though it will cost more a bit. im not jst trying to scare u into buying my auto, im bein honest when i say it will cost more, but again really worth it

Re: Automatic question

If I were to buy the overhaul kit for my 98 ludes trans, I see it around $200. What other parts should I buy while I have it apart and on the bench this winter? I'd rather just rebuild it myself (mechanic neighbor and myself) and do it all at once. I'd like the 5spd swap, but would honestly just rebuild what I have.

Re: Automatic question

5spd swap sir... lol. I did mine for around 1500, but i got some new toys thrown in... inovavitive motor mounts, new clutch, 8 lb flywheel.. etc. If you have a mechanic to help and will be doing the work yourself it is pretty simple. I downloaded the Helms manual for the lude and just followed the pull the motor and reinstall the motor steps. Had to drill a hole in the firewall for the clutch and master, but for the most part its straight forward. I've got a few parts if you go the swap route:) shift linkage, shift box, half shaft stock transmission side mount.... good luck with what ever decision u make

Re: Automatic question

might have lucked out. Found a 25k miles JDM engine/trans and all goodies for a swap for $1200.

Ugghhh! I'd like to do it, but rather rebuild what I have. Kind of curious if a 2001 trans will work..

Re: Automatic question

Looks like its time to gather parts for the swap. I found two trannies for sale. One from an 01 and a 97. And they are from an SH model. I have a 1998 base. Should I buy one?

This is the link. H22 ATTS unit and Transmission

Thanks in advance

Re: Automatic question

Skip the SH tranny. There's a **** load of conversion that needs to be done in order for it to fit in a base, and after the extra time and money you'll spend; ATTS isn't going to work. Unless you're getting a SH block too, it's not worth the hassle.

Don't forget to also look into the Accord transmissions and the 4th gen Prelude transmissions as well. An Accord one will probably be cheaper to get your hands on.

Re: Automatic question

Really? That's good to know. Auto or manual? If auto, can I use the sport shift? If manual what model?

Re: Automatic question

For the manuals. I don't think any of the Accord autos. will work because they're not sport-sift compatible.

But any manual off of a 94-02 Accord that had a 4cylinder, F series motor should work. There was a guide on H-T that showed all the ones that will work. I'll see if I can hunt it down for ya.

Here ya' go man:
Prelude/H-series Transmission Codes and Ratios master-list - Honda-Tech

Any trans on there except for the ones from a S2000 or the ones that list ATTS will work.

Re: Automatic question

I'd be worried about it grinding into gear. Might be something cheap, might be a $800 fix. No real way to check unless you can haul it to a trans shop and pay them to open it up and look for something.

Re: Automatic question

Ughh. Looks like the JDM engine/trans/5spd swap may be the way to go. I just wish I could start the engine before considering buying it.
