How to polish 5th gen wheels?

Hi everyone,

I just recently got an '01 lude and want to polish my wheels. I don't have access to a garage of my own, so I will be doing the polishing as the car stands. I've got access to legit machine shops and can get all sorts of sand paper, solvents, and tools.

I went into the lab yesterday and there's a bunch of P500J grit sandpaper I've been using for a casting lab.
Sorry if this post is redundant, I just haven't been able to find a good DIY guide for 5th gen rims; I've only found people's final products (some aftermarket) and some look quite legit.
Are the 5th gen rims made out of aluminum? If so, anyone know the specific alloy? How do you guys go about taking care of this task and what kind of upkeep should I expect?

Pictures of my lude under the "New '01 Luder" post here on the 5th gen.
This is my first car, so I'm not very good as far as practice goes, but I understand the tech talk quite well.

I will post more pics once I've done some work on it.

Thanks for the help!

Sz

Re: How to polish 5th gen wheels?

I'm to assume you mean the "blade" style rims. I'm not sure if the standard 5 spoke SH rims can be or not - never seen or heard of it being done.

Polishing them is pretty easy really.... start off with a 500 or so grit sand paper and just work your way down from there wetsanding the entire time... eventually you'll get to the finest paper and that'll take the longest - hit it with whatever compound/polish/sealer/clear it needs and you're done.

i can't remember exactly what you're supposed to do after the finest grade paper... i just know it's one of the above listed things so hopefully someone else can chime in on that

Re: How to polish 5th gen wheels?

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, I was referring to the 5th gen base stock blade rims. They've got some black spots that I believe are coming from the brake pads. I'm gonna read the manual and maybe I can figure out what alloy the wheels are made out of. That way, it'll only be a matter of how to (very gently) "machine" that kind of metal. I'm gonna ask around some more and see if I can find out what's good.
I'll keep you guys posted, I'm sure I'm not the only one lookin' to get this done :)

Re: How to polish 5th gen wheels?

Hell yeah spoon, thanks for that!

I like the DIY greeting:
"Hey Szeth did you read the title to the D.I.Y. forum? it clearly says "READ THE STICKIES BEFORE CREATING A THREAD HERE." So are you creating a proper D.I.Y. thread or are just creating a "HELP ME I cant install this" thread? If you're simply browsing this forum then you are not guilty of anything. BUT if you are trying to create a nonsense thread that doesn't pertain to anything D.I.Y. it will be deleted and you will be flagged for not reading the rules."

I was like, "Oh ****! What'd I do wrong?"

Re: How to polish 5th gen wheels?

Be forewarned, the 5th gens blades have ripples in the faces of them from the original machinging and they are a bitch to get out. You're going to have to start with a very rough grit, at most 220.
