New '01 Luder

Hey everyone,

Just bought an '01 lude from a private seller. I'm loving this thing! Although it's an automatic, no shame since I'd probably crash driving stick... It's my first car so I'm really happy with it and it's been taken care of real well! :)

The engine's got 95k and 5w30 syntec oil and I'm due for a change in 100 miles. I'm a mechanical engineering senior and I'm published in a SAE journal of materials and I don't know jack about cars.. which is kind of a shame haha.

Well, real glad I came across the site, some of the rides are legit! I'm gonna get the lude washed, vacuumed and waxed tomorrow. The interior's beautiful, just what I need! Oh, it's silver.

I'm currently burning the rest of the mid grade fuel I got it with so I can replace with premium and get that compression poppin'!

Any of you got tips on what kinda oil, transmission fluid, etc the thing'd need? I mean, I still gotta find where the damn dipping sticks are hah Oh and the steering boot rack on my side is torn, so gonna have to get that replaced as well!

Thanks for all the help!

Sz

Re: New '01 Luder

Just run Mobile1 pure synthetic 10w-30. Use a oil filter that a S2k uses.(The only diff is that its abit longer and it reduces pressure. For tranny I`m an Auto I`m not sher wher to put the oil in but don`t run a ything other than Honda ATF. Has the best additives out there. Bleed the braking system withsome Prestone Dot3 brake fluid. Flush the coolant of the cooling system with some new coolant 50/50 mix or whatever is recommended where you live. Then bleed the system with the bleed valve located by the vtec silinoid or right on top of the thermostat housing. Are your rotors in good condition? No hazing, heat marks, out of spec(a lip) etc. Ummm idk what else. Oh run some Seafoambefore oil change relatively easy and will do good to your lude.

Re: New '01 Luder

Woah, thanks for all the replies!
I will post pictures tomorrow when I go get the oil changed and the boot put on her.

distant, in school they teach you how to think like an engineer, they don't teach you how to be one.
If you can take apart your car, that sounds like some legit practice. I mean, I work on thrust reverser engineering support for GE. That's my strong point. Too bad it doesn't apply on the road. I go to Hopkins in Baltimore. And no, you're not crazy, you just gotta learn to do the math and struggle through it even if you feel like giving up.

Aced, 10w? It's winter here in Baltimore and the temperature can get below 0, snows and **** so don't know if I should use a thin one... Wouldn't 5w be better? I gotta look up all that other stuff. I'm not doing the work myself, but I'll let my mechanic know what's good. He's had 3 ludes in the past and now has an accord with a lude engine in it so I trust his intuition.

I wish I could do the work myself, but I just can't find the time with school and work and all, but I'm gonna read the manual at least and maybe get acquainted with the diagrams... At least I know I'll get those down

I will post pictures tomorrow, I promise!

As promised!

She's all stock, but that's cause I just got her. I wanna get new rims and calipers. Maybe get the spoiler and side mirrors repainted. Anyone got some recommendations?

Enjoy

Re: New '01 Luder

Yeah, I noticed that getting the car washed didn't get all the black off the wheels, so I'm gonna need to get a stronger solvent. What'd be a good one? Also, what kind of suspension kits would be legit? I don't wanna lower it too much 'cause Baltimore roads suck and I don't wanna crack an oil panel or anything like that...
Thanks again for the help.

Re: New '01 Luder

Meguiar's products are usually pretty good for budget cleaning, I would stay away from Armor-All products if at all possible, I've seen some horrible things from people using their stuff. When it comes to engine oils, I personally use nothing less than Castrol or Amsoil and Wix fuel/oil filters. Castrol no longer contains Paraffin, which is sort of a wax additive used back when oil came in cardboard containers, added so the oil wouldn't seep through the can. Castrol is the only Company I know of that has removed that from their formulation. Paraffin (I think I'm spelling it right) will cause the evil 'sludging' you hear about. Then again, so will going too long between oil changes. I don't know much when it comes to transmission fluids.

Just my $0.02

Re: New '01 Luder

only use Honda MTF!!! i don't care how good royal purple or any of the other good stuff out there says, only ever use tranny fulid from honda. as for engine oil, the top brand names don't really matter a whole lot over the smaller brand names. they just charge more. just use your synthetic 5W-30 and its all good. but if you are concerned about putting a better brand name in then Mobil1 is good. Welcome though! you just made one of the best purchases you can make! :D
