Need HELP/info on swaping my Prelude SH to JDM

Hello everyone. I am a newbie here and the major reason why I signed up for this forum is to try to find/obtain information I need to swap my 97 Prelude SH to a Honda H22A Prelude Type S SH (97-01) JDM motor. As you all know I already have the H22A motor in it but I have some issues with it. The car started to have a misfire at idle and after checking plugs, wires, etc. I compression tested the motor. My readings are bad. I am loosing 30% compression on cylinders 1,2,3. I am assuming this is the issue causing the misfire. Car still runs fine when driving on the highway, but gets very annoying moving around the city or in dead stop traffic. For a while I thought about just selling the Prelude and buying something else because I need a reliable daily driver car. But after looking on Engine Depot I realized that the JDM motors are fairly inexpensive for the stated mileage on them. Hell for the same price all you can get is a motor that's probably in just as bad shape as mine. If I can do the swap without blowing thousands of dollars on it I would keep the car for a long time.

The questions that I do have are:
-Can I just swap the motor alone transferring all the accessories and tranny?
-Will I need to replace or tune the ECU when upgrading to JDM?
-What else do I need to swap except the motor to get the car running the way it should with the JDM?

It is very hart to find an engine alone even on sites that only carry JDM but I'm keeping my eyes open for something. If I don't need to do a full swap involving tranny, ECU, harnesses etc. than why should I pay close to $3,000 for a complete kit? Engine alone I assume can't be more than $1,000 and I'm sure I can get one of the local Honda enthusiasts to help me with the swap. I currently have 120k original miles on the car and everything else is pretty fresh on the car so I would hate to see her go but I will not risk putting a stock used engine with god knows how many miles on it.

Any help for you guys would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure a ton of you went through the same or at least similar process. I tried searching the forum on my own for this but couldn't really find what I was looking for.
Thanks in advance

The type s motor (i dont think) wont bolt onto a sh tranny. You need motor trans and may be ecu. You might have to do some SEARCHING for the ecu need.

Re: Need HELP/info on swaping my Prelude SH to JDM

Thanks, Any idea on witch motor will be a direct replacement? and if not direct than at least one that might only need a ECU? I am trying to figure this out but it gets really confusing. The red top motor seems to only come as a complete swap but it says its out of a 97-01 Prelude SH? And than there is a black top (also JDM) but I thought those were for the 4th gen Preludes.... Im really confused

Re: Need HELP/info on swaping my Prelude SH to JDM

The SH block has different trans bolt holes therefor the trans is different. I would just get an engine from an SH. If you see what preludes have atts i think there is another market with that system in it. I dont know much about 5th gens i just got one.

Re: Need HELP/info on swaping my Prelude SH to JDM

Just found all the info on another forum. The engine i'm talking about fits perfect. The guy I was talking to has the same car as mine and swapped only the motor in it with the JDM H22 red top. they fit perfect and run good on stock ECU. for maximum performance they do recommend to swap the ECU to the Type-s. I guess the Type-s motor is made for a car with a LSD and in this case an ATTS.

There you go my friend. I think the s-spec or something has lsd but no atts. Gl with the swap. Do the timing belt and water pump while its out.

Re: Need HELP/info on swaping my Prelude SH to JDM

agreed... do the water pump and timing belt swap while the engine is out. if you do it yourself its cheap... please please please.... if you don't have to pay someone to do it... do it yourself. all you need is the prelude manual and time. i did it and more myself. I did auto to manual swap as well as engine swap. would have cost me 4k in labor... win for doing it yourself and when you do it yourself you feel gangster and can tell everyone yeah... i did that... what???? plus you know whats up with your car... when something is wrong you can feel it... cheers

Re: Need HELP/info on swaping my Prelude SH to JDM

What kind of swap did you do? same one I'm looking at?
The mechanical part of the swap I'm not concerned about, it's the electrical that might get tricky? or are those JDM motors almost the same?

The major problem I'm having is locating an engine alone. Everywhere I look, all I can find are full swaps. Emailed a couple places to see if they have individual engines and they all told me no. The other thing is that I'm a little scared to run the JDM on the stock ECU. Most people swap them to the JDM set up but my state requires emissions... I have my tricks to get around a lot of stuff because I worked at a repair shop for 6 years and I specialized in emissions contols but I'm not sure what kind of OBDII reading would the JDM ECU put out...

I wish I can afford a second car so I can take my time researching and doing the work on the prelude...

Re: Need HELP/info on swaping my Prelude SH to JDM

The Type S *should* be a direct swap.... it's the only one that will not interfere with the majority of the SH's components because of the transmission it uses. look at the type s review over on preludepower in the 5th gen section

No need to hold me to this, a little search goes a long ways.

but seriously, look into that thread i suggested and you'll find all your answers..
