My 97 Prelude, Making Ticking Sounds in Low RPM!! NEED HELP :(

Hi, it's great to see a Prelude Forum working :D

my Prelude' 97 is making a weird sound on the low rpms of 1000 and lower. I believe there has been some misfunction with the timing belt or something, but I don;'t see any physical problems on the outer side. It's kind of a rattling ticking sound.
To be specific as possible, I think the sound is coming around the left front of my engine, pretty much around the belt (or timing belt? I'm a noob with all the mechanical terms)
I had a overall inspection about 2 weeks ago, and the mechanic just said that you'll be fine for about 3000 miles, so come back later.
But everytime I hear the sound getting worse, for example.. this morning was freaky.
I was late to class, so didn't have time to warm-up the car before leaving.
After I arrived, I could hear the car literally making a bass-sound around the engine... scaring me out..... it wasn't the ticking sound anymore.

Funny enough, it comes and goes as it prefers, too.
I usually don't hear most of it in the morning going to school..
It just pops up usually in the afternoon or just driving 20~30miles.
Please give me some advice :D

I got this beauty for a very cheap price, still knowing it had a incredible history (salvaged lol). The car was rebuilt and the previous owner mentioned that the engine had 150000miles and the body had 220000.

However, I wasn't able to retreive any evidence of his statment, being the
car noob I am...

I replaced the cracked front mirror, glued some cracks on the bumber,
silicone-pasted parts of the exterior that lost it's paint and everything

But, as of now, my biggest concern is definitely the low rpm ticking noise.
It comes and goes....so.. it's kinda hard to tell :(

It could be a number of things, but if you're unsure of the following:

timing belt
tensioner
water pump
valve adjustment

then you need to take it to a reputable mechanic ASAP. The tapping could be anything from the valves to the tensioner starting to go.

if the tensioner goes, you will more than likely be saying goodbye to that motor.

Make sure the harmonic balancer is torqued properly. Also pull the valve cover and inspect the timing belt. Could be a number of things but I would start at the balancer. The balance shaft belt could have snapped and is causing excessive vibration and that usually means the timing belt is soon to come. ...

Whens the last time the oil has been changed? With motors that have higher mileage, if the oil wasnt changed every 3000 miles, it can sludge up and actually cause a ticking noise just from all the build up inside of your motor. Not saying thats whats wrong, but sometimes its little stuff like that. Goodluck
