Insane leak. Help!

So for those of you who have read my recent threads, you'll know that my car is going through hell. Cracked windshield, jacked up tire, crazy noise coming from exhaust, and now I discovered the worst has yet to come. A buddy of mine who drives a '00 SH looked under my car today and texted me while I was in class and gave me news that I had been dreading ever since I got the car. He told me I had a pretty gnarly leak goin on and I need to look at it as soon as I get home. So when I got home, I checked my oil levels and it was way low (below the lowest hole) so I decided to drive to AutoZone to get more oil when my girlfriend calls and needs me to stop by and get something. When I get there, I look under the car just to see if anythings different than usual (water dripping from me running my A/C and a bit of drops of oil) but when I get down there I see a nasty puddle of this: (Pics attached)

What should I do guys? I about ready to give up on this damn car.

Re: Insane leak. Help!

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like the oil is coming down from the passenger side of the car? If so, check to see if any oil is coming from below the distributer or anywhere else on the side of the motor. Another guess could be the rear main seal? Pop the hood and see if you can track down where the oil is coming from.

clean/degrease as much underneath the engine/tranny as possible, start her up, and see if you notice where its coming from.

Do I need to take anything off or out or can I get around mostly everything with my hands? I've not much of a mechanical guru so... sorry for being so naive.

Any type of brake cleaner. A popular one is Brakleen by crc. You can find it at any parts store.

brake cleaner will dry out the hoses and can eat away at the paint. engine degreaser is what he needs, not brake cleaner.

you can always take the car up the the drive in car wash and pop your hood and use their engine degreaser with the powerwasher. its best to keep the car running and keep the air filter dry and try to keep the altenator from getting too wet.

and i would also second the notion of it being the distributor seal leaking

Re: Insane leak. Help!

If it turns out that it is the distributor seal, how would I go about fixing the leak? And does anyone have estimates on what this could cost?

I have been using brakleen for a long time now and have never ever had that problem or heard of that ever occuring. Ive only heard it might melt certain plastics or something, but once again never heard about that in a real life secinario. And yes brakleen may hurt the clearcoat(not like brake fluid) but remember, he is cleaning the parts underneath the car, not washing his car.

It is very easy to do, it is just a little rubber O ring. It is very cheap if you do it yourself.

Came home, pop the hood and no oil for now. Now, what I have left to do is the valve cover gasket, cam seal, and pan gasket. Did the PCV valve and hose and that must have been what made gasket on the valve cover leaked. (Back up pressure)".

Should I try and do those things as well?

Re: Insane leak. Help!

I use Engine Brite. Just make sure after you degrease and start it, you watch very carefully for oil anywhere. It helps to have buddies with multiple angles.

Here's some more pictures of where I think the leak may be coming from. This is on the left of the motor by the distributor (I think?)

Re: Insane leak. Help!

Cam seal or distributor.

Cam seal:

Take the valve cover off and unbolt the I6 camshaft bearing. It should just be sitting in there. Replace it and the valve cover gasket. Reinstall valve cover, torque bolts to 7ft/lbs I believe and the bearing (7 or 9ft/lbs also I think, but definitely consult the manual). It's super cheap. It's the little black plug on the end of the intake camshaft.

Distributor:

Mark the ignition timing (where the bolts are), unplug the distributor clips and unbolt it from the engine. The seal is an o ring and it should be obvious.

Thanks so much. I'm going to shine her up with some degreaser, run it for a bit, see where it's coming from and go with it from there. Preludezone.com forever <3

Good luck man! I was thinking the cam seal myself but wasn't sure.

And Randall, the little black plug on the intake camshaft, is that the little black plug in my pictures? It's roughly the size of a dollar coin, maybe a bit bigger than that.

Sounds right to me. It's behind your ignition coil. To put it in perspective, it's right where the distributor is except on the intake side. Maybe 2 inch diameter by 1 inch length and hollowed. You can see it in the photos. Picture 4 is pretty much dead on it.
