I have a problem when i stop my car and put it into park, providing i leave the engine on, i attempt to put the car into gear. I cannot, in order to successfully put my car into gear, I have to turn the engine off and turn it back on. What is happening? 1997 Prelude 4 speed Automatic base model, 142 k miles.

Hmm, have you tried just pushing the brake again instead of restarting the car?

lol i have EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!! lol! anyway, when it comes to my auto, its been jerking between gears, very hard, after i changed tranny fluid metal came pouring out, and this is last straw for me. i believe its a closer sign to tranny failure. thats why starting in a week, my 5spd swap beigns! all parts are bought, and brian, prelude1897, is gonna be tearing out my pos auto and slapping in the goodness of 5spd! i can join u "cool" guys with proper gear boxes now! :)

In my honest opinion it could be early signs of your tranny going out.

Did some research...does a shift lock solenoid mean anything. Im hoping this is not with the transmission, everything else about the car is smooth and sexy...im in love except for this.

Re: 5th Gen Prelude base model stays in park

yes it has to do with your transmission. 5th gen Preludes that are auto = major issues...

Re: 5th Gen Prelude base model stays in park

Its prolly the neutral safety switch. I had the same problem on my 4th gen. It's an easy fix.
