Icon5 2001 transmission issues...

Hi,

I recently found a 2001 automatic Prelude with 119,000 miles on it. I was really interested in buying it, so I took it to a mechanic nearby to take a look at it under the hood. When you start the car, one of three things happens:

1) No check engine light
2) Check engine light comes on
3) Check engine light comes on and D4 flashes

The mechanic found that there were two error codes: P0700 and P0758. I am very worried about the car's transmission. The guy said that the solenoid needs to be replaced and that it might just be an electrical issue. However, I've read that automatic Preludes are notorious for having bad transmissions. Should I just buy a manual prelude? The same seller has a 1998 SH 5 speed with 109,000 miles for $5,000. Do you guys think I should just buy that one?

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes. Buy the SH, or hold out for a 5th gen SH if you like that better. They harder than finding a needle in a haystack, but they are out there...

Get the 1998 Prelude SH if you could. Why? I am an advocate for the Prelude SH. Also, the SH has lower miles.

Good luck with the deal.

Re: 2001 transmission issues...

i had the same problem with my girlfreinds 98 lude its a shift solenoid paid 38 bucks at honda for the part put it in and all was good. however doing further diagnosis before just buying the part is reccomended. could just have an open wire going to the solenoid causing it to not work. but anyway id go for the 5 speed. itll be better in the long run.

Re: 2001 transmission issues...

The 98 SH 5 speed only has 109,000 miles on it and the engine is gorgeous. I think I'm going to go for that one because I don't want transmission problems. The seller is asking $5,000 for it. Does this seem like a reasonable price?

Re: 2001 transmission issues...

as another means of comparison I got my '01 SH for $7k with 75,000 miles, and for what it's worth, I've had multiple valet guys tell me it's the cleanest stock Prelude they'd ever seen.

Unless it's super clean, I would counter offer with something like $3750 and then meet in the middle with your seller. You need to take into account all other aspects of the car besides the engine, although under the hood is obviously important. I think you should be able to come out with a good deal.

Re: 2001 transmission issues...

I say go for the SH - it's lower miles which is a plus, and a manual. Obviously as others have said, many things should be looked at besides engine/miles. If it's good otherwise, heck yes.

Plus, the SH rides like the sucker is on rails unlike any other fwd car I've had the pleasure of using.

Re: 2001 transmission issues...

I only looked at the first two parts of the date, never the year... sorry about posting here. I assumed only a few weeks ago was new enough, but hey... somebody may take a year to choose!
