What to do with my 5th gen?

Alright guys, I need some ideas.

So I've had a bit of bad luck lately with my prelude. My windshield cracked and she's making a weird raspy noise again. I think a bolt or bracket underneath my car on the exhaust system is loose. It makes the noise around 1.8k rpms. But anywho, I just bought a bottle of touch of paint, the little pen one, from AutoZone and I was out cleaning some chips and scratches and I noticed that my hood and grill have some pretty good little chips everywhere. I cleaned a few of them up but it really stressed me out and now I want a new paint job. Yes, I know it's foolish to want a new paint job over a bunch of little chips on a probably 14 year old paint job.

However, what's been going through my mind is the idea of either doing a 5 speed swap on my current 97 auto lude or selling it and getting a manual. I'm wondering if it's worth selling it and getting a manual because I could always end up with a car with the same if not worse paint. But in the long run, I'd have the car until the engine falls out of it so getting a new paint job wouldn't be so emotionally attaching.

Would getting a 5 speed swap be just as efficient as getting a manual prelude, mechanically speaking? I'd like to know if there were any flaws in the 5 speed swap theory as compared to getting a manual prelude to begin with.

One other thing that goes through my head is about how much my car is worth with the cracked windshield, dented hood, and small dent on the trunk. The raspy noise doesn't affect the way the car drives at all and the paint isn't bad, to be honest, but I'm too OCD for my own good, especially with my first car.

So what do you guys think? Should I save up some cash and sell my car and find a manual prelude? Or should I get the money for a 5 speed swap and a new windshield?

I attached some picture of my current car so you all can see it's condition.

5 speed swap would make it a completely different car

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

Take the car to a body shop or some place that offers a PDR service (paint-less dent repair) Depending on how close those dents are to the skeleton of the hood and trunk - you may be able to have them "rubbed" or "rolled" out. (yes thats the proper way to remove a dent, using suction cups or any other method does more damage than one would think)

The rocks and chips are nothing to worry about. We all have them (some worse than others) and unless you intend to never drive the car on highways/winter/ any length of time than you will just get more. Focus on the motor running well before the consideration of a paint job sinks in too far. You will want to have it done right - nothing is more irritating than a bad paintjob, and that's not cheap (talking a couple thousand to be done properly)

Red Preludes are known to fade faster than any other out there.

Swapping to a manual will cost you about 2.5k at MOST. A new windshield will be about $300.

Taking into consideration that your paint will eventually fade and the cost of the windshield/manual swap - it is entirely your decision if you would like to risk selling the car and purchasing one with potentially more issues than what you can find upon inspecting the car prior to purchasing it.

If you enjoy the car and know that it has a healthy motor - I would save up for a manual swap and slowly purchase the parts until the auto decides to fail. If all else goes well (after you have replaced the windshield and fixed the exhaust leak) and your motor is still healthy with minor leaks - go for a paintjob.

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

i've seen many people say you'd save money and alot of stress by just selling your auto and buying a manual. Check craigslist in your area. I got my 97 Prelude for $1800.

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

definitely sell it, if you want to drive a five speed. save a little and get a manual. its way less of a headache, and youll love your new car just as much im sure. as far as the little chips and minor dings i would try not to stress if you drive it all thats is gonna happen. im more of a functional guy myself, dont get me wrong. all my cars are fresh, but as long as you maintain it and it runs good. your good :)

What do I need to look for on a 5speed? Or on a 5th gen, period. I got screwed on my auto, I ended up replacing the tranny one already.

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

PH3AR, Im in the same boat right now, got screwed on my prelude and had to dump a bunch of money into it right after purchase, The dents r painful to look at but its better than not having the car preform properly

Will a prelude with a 5 speed swap function just as well as a prelude that came stock with the manual trans?

^^ Yes.

You even get to have a bonus: an auto gauge cluster to confuse the hell out of anyone that gets in the drivers seat.

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

Can you switch out the gauge cluster with the one from a manual as to make it all the more authentic? And @tjkulesz yeah dude, it sucks, but you're right about preferring a car that functions with a banged up body than one that can't even drive at all.

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

@PH3AR Just some food for thought. Will you be doing the swap yourself, or paying a shop? I'm new to Honda, but I'm imagining a shop charging a pretty penny for the labor. After all, it requires new tranny, maybe clutch, plus a pedal cluster swap, shift linkage and shift rod etc etc.

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

yes you can swap out the auto gauge cluster for a manny one, but the odometer will also be changed. meaning it wont read the true mileage on your car. that doesnt sound like something someone with OCD would like very much.

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

i'm in the same boat. just replaced the oil cooler and got new tires. but I have body work that def needs to be done as well. i'd love to do a 5speed swap.. but finding all the parts and putting them in yourself is some real work. I love my lude, and I wouldn't sell it just to get a 5speed.

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

I agree with wings. You've fixed the AT, drive it til it fails again. Could be 100k before it fails. Made it about 141 the first time right?
Swap it, get an after market set of gauge inserts like the white ones or whatever for a manual gauge and be done. Auto cluster has a ribbon of slots for p d n 1 2 3 where manual doesn't have that ribbon. 141k is just getting broken in good.

Yes red fades. Get ya a $150 cover king cover and keep it out of the sun as much as possible. They have one with light block that'll last about a year. You can get 3 year cover from evolution for $500+ to custom fit. You're ocd? Then bird poo won't bug ya. I can cover/uncover mine 2 minutes tops, store it in the trunk and you can cable lock it if theft is a concern.

Windshield? Next time you go see your insurance guy, tell him you want glass breakage insurance. Shouldn't cost much. About $50/yr for me with $0.. yes zero dollar deductable. Get that and wait a month or two and have your insurance fix it. Notice I didn't say free? Nothing is free. Somebody somewhere pays sooner or later, but that's for another thread.

It's your call phear, but as for me, I'd keep it.

Re: What to do with my 5th gen?

Lol didn't notice it was so old until you commented.
Well for the future readers info......
If you do the 5spd swap right it's no different from a prelude that came manual you can swap out the clusters and swap the mileage readers, only thing different is the ECU's as you'll have to move the chip from it and have those random idle surges, I rarley get them so it isn't a big deal to me. Cost wise be paitent and you will get it done cheap. In the end, my swap was free, bought a parts car and extra new parts and was able to sell stuff off the parts car to make all my money back plus profit. Doing the swap yourself you will save a ton of cash and learn a lot in the process. Do the swap or just sell and buy a manual? Well thats up to you. I mainly did the swap because I had a lot of time and work into my car before to get it running good.
