5th gen windshield.

So my windshields cracked. Yeah, I've had quite the strain of bad luck lately. Anywho, what's the best way to go about fixing it?

Re: 5th gen windshield.

call your insurance company and see if they'll do it for free. some states offer free windshield replacement through the insurance company and they WILL NOT increase your premiums. FL i know is one that does it.. OK, not so sure. otherwise, you'll have to call a windshield repair shop and get it done. i've never had to pay for a new windshield in the states. so i'm not sure what it would cost if you had to pay for it. but to give you an idea of what it MIGHT cost, i had to pay for a new windshield in germany here and that was about 330 euros. which is roughly 450 american. the cost of things here really don't compare to the cost of things there. but so far i've seen, what something costs here in euros is about what it costs there in dollars. so if my hypothesis holds true, it would be around 330 dollars there give or take. maybe someone might chime with a more accurate estimate.

also, just remembered, depending on how severe the crack is, it can be fixed with just a resin injection... and it is A LOT cheaper. sometimes the resin won't completely fix it, but it will keep it from spreading.

Yeah the resin injection is only applicable to cracks under the length of a dollar bill. Mine, however, was not :(

Re: 5th gen windshield.

Safelite repair safelite replace

It's like $200 for a new windshield and they will come to you and do it..

And to any 4th gen owners.. If you ever replace your windshield get a 5th gen windshield.. The rubber piece is made to the windshield unlike the crappy clip on mold that always comes loose

This is true in most states, for most insurance carriers. Windshield damage is normally covered under your comprehensive, and it's cheaper for them to cover your repair than it is to fix the car after the windshield blows out and you crash. Some repair shops will file the paperwork for you and won't charge you anything out of pocket -- that depends on the location and the carrier.

I live in Florida, so your state may be different. My windshield and right door glass was pitted from who knows what. Called glass company and they replaced both at no charge and filed paperwork for me.

I worked at Safelites Call Center for two years and took most insurance companies calls that were handled by Safelite.

That being said, the states that offer glass waivers are FL, KY, and MA. FL only will waive deductibles for windshields. KY and MA have full glass waivers for every piece of glass.

I see the the OP is from OK. You will need comp coverage and your deductible will probably come into play. If the crack is less than six inches long Safelite will attempt to repair it for free before replacing it, and if the repair ever fails, you will have to pay your ded for the w/s. If your ded is higher than the cost of the glass, try getting the free repair before paying any money.

Another thing you should know is you are legally able to use any shop you want to do the work. With that said, you need to be wary of shops that arent affiliated with your insurance company. Non affiliated shops will usually do the work for what the ins comp wants to pay for it, but the ins comp wont back that shops warranty. So basically if you are road trippin and get a nice leak from the w/s, you need to drive back to the non-affiliated shop to fix it.

Please feel free to ask any questions. I know I missed some things.

Good luck!
