Horrible Gas Mileage

Hey all,

Got my '01 SH about 2 months back. Love it so far, but have noted that I'm getting horrible gas mileage. I'm talking 12-14 mpg's, and I'm not braking or accelerating too hard!

Maybe the gas gauge is off kilter? Any thoughts here?

I checked the air filter, and that is good. Only thought is that my exhaust sounds louder than stock, even though it is a stock exhaust. Perhaps the issue could be isolated to there?

Any help is appreciated, especially if I can avoid the stealership.

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

Forgot to mention my driving habits. 100% city, usually shifting at 3-4kRPM.

Only other thought based on my thread search is 02 sensor, but no sensors are going off...

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

How are your spark plugs looking? A cogged catalytic convertor would hinder your mileage too if it was exhaust related. I would also replace the PCV valve, about $3 and helps mileage if it was clogged. I'm about 25 city so it's not your driving habits...

When checking your fuel mileage you need to first start with a full tank and zeroed out odometer. Then when you refill you will need to fill the tank completely again and divide the miles by the gallons (such as 300mi/10gal, or even 50mi/1.5gal).

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

There are a lot if things that can attribute to bad gas mileage: driving style, fuel pressure, injectors, spark, O2 sensor, map sensor, TPS, compression, the list never ends. May just need a tune up.

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

Thanks guys. Tires are relatively new (about 7,500 miles on them), but I agree I need to check the pressure in them and check for leaks.

ididdy, I agree; I may just need a tuneup.

I noted something was wrong when I reset my trip odometer after a fillup, and noted I'm only getting about 100 miles per half tank.

No CEL or anything either.

Great tips thanks. What should I be looking for in spark plugs?

I do what you're instructing all the time regarding trip odometer. I thought about buying a 2gal gas canister, filling it and keeping it in the trunk to run out my tank entirely to see if it's a fuel gauge issue.

When I fill up, I noted that it's extremely difficult to top off. I also noted that my fuel gauge stops just at the "F" or slightly below it, never slightly over it.

When I bought the car, the owner had a little damage (talking very small here; small enough that the owner didn't repair it at all because it was just a few scratches), where the back driver side panel/bumper meet just below the taillight. I'm sure that's where the gas tank is somewhat located internally, but I highly doubt a tiny bump would impact the tank.

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

Great tips thanks. What should I be looking for in spark plugs?

I would check the gap, you're looking for .40" I believe. But mainly the fact that the electrodes (the tip) isn't broken off, smushed down all the way, etc.

I do what you're instructing all the time regarding trip odometer. I thought about buying a 2gal gas canister, filling it and keeping it in the trunk to run out my tank entirely to see if it's a fuel gauge issue.

I wouldn't recommend running the tank dry, you'll burn up the fuel pump real fast since it uses the fuel as a cooling lubricant. Even when your gauge reads "E" there is generally still another 2-3 gallons left in the tank. Manufacturers don't want drivers running on fumes and burning parts up.

When I fill up, I noted that it's extremely difficult to top off. I also noted that my fuel gauge stops just at the "F" or slightly below it, never slightly over it.

The gauge may be reading incorrectly then. Whenever the pump at the gas station clicks off don't continue to fill the tank, it's already as full as it should be.

The fuel tank is located directly underneath the rear seat area and wouldn't be affected by a minor accident such as the one you stated.

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

Who says they're dead? Just saying they're getting paid by the hour.

Definitely a tune up, stop correcting gaps if the plugs seen 100k. change your air filter, then iacv, pcv, o2 sensor, and tps.

And yes, check that your e-brake unlocks when you put the arm down. That's good for improving gas mileage.

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

^what he said.. Basically a tune up

With the spark plugs.. There's a lot of different things to look for.. You basically want a tan looking plug.. If it's white (not clean but white)or burnt or the porcelain is damaged then there are other problems.. The spark plugs basically tell you how the engine is doing

It could just be that your spark plugs are old.. If you haven't ever changed them then I would go ahead and do that..

And hookers don't effect the gas mileage.. That's an urban legend! They smoke crack and don't weigh a lot..

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

LMAO...

Odometer reading on my lude is 76k, and to my knowledge the plugs have never been replaced, so I'll definitely start there.

The car is in fantastic shape but needs a little TLC, so I'm going to give it a tune up, as you all have suggested.

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

Im sure you're already doing this, but make sure you're using ONLY Premium. Although it usually doesn't cause it to be half that bad, crappy gas(like Joe Blow's Gas out in the middle of no where or something like that) can attribute to lowered gas mileage….although not as much as an issue with Premium gas. Check spark plugs, all your fluids, check that air filter(I personally noticed a difference when my stock filter got really dirty)

Nope, the burn rate of the fuel does not change. Premium does not burn slower or faster than regular....it just resists spontaneous combustion as the heat and pressure in the chamber rise so premium resists detonation better. The octane rating of the fuel has absolutely nothing to do with the burn rate of the fuel. Octane rating is purely a measure of the fuel's ability to resist detonation.

So get this...

I took my car to my local dealership today, and they did a full inspection. The result?

NO ISSUES.

I guess this is a good news/bad news thing - I'm still not buying it though!?! 14-15mpgs tops with 100% city driving? My commute is 1.5mi to work one way, but I can't fathom my driving habits being that bad (no extreme hard braking or accelerating)...

its been 10 years now, but I doubt that "inspections" have changed that much since I was a mechanic at Lexus.

I hope you didn't pay for said inspection.

Re: Horrible Gas Mileage

Plugs = $4/each iridium $3/each platinum
Wires = $25 autozone; $50-100 for msd/ Taylor/ neuspeed
Cap = $30
Rotor = $35
Air filter =$15-20 paper/ 35-40 k&n drop in
Do these first, if you have the same mpg, then get the valves and sensors done.

I would recommend only using NGK spark plugs. The wires I would recommend Honda or NGK.

Yeah, you're right Dwend, still like my Taylor thunderspark 8.2 wires. Great middlepack wire, lowest resistance for 40 dollars. But then again, GM camp. Even gave my 82 celica supra some pep! kinda hard to find NGK in NYC, probably o'reillys right?
