tranny problems or clutch???

hey guys,

im new to the honda game and my first car was the 97 prelude sh. so ive been drinking my car for about five days now and lately ive been feeling like 5th is starting to grind. i let my boy drives it nd it doesnt happen to him but then when i drive it happens? could it be cause of the way im clutching even when i put my foot all the way in? or maybe is it cause my clutch is soft and isnt getting that much grip? cause i hear prelude trannys are alot of money to fix. so idk what to do

Re: tranny problems or clutch???

Problem is likely the synchro/fork as I recall there were issues with early 5th gens.

Double clutch and you should be fine. Might also also want to google. Should fine plenty of info since it is a common issue.

I got the same issue. If you clutch in shift to the right and give it like 1 second before going into 5th it goes smooth. If you shift right into it from 4th it grinds.

Is that what yours is doing? Your friends might be shifting slower than you are because they are not used to it but you just nail that sucker right in.

From what I understand if its a "bad gear" it won't just grind one gear it will also grind another with it. (might be wrong on this one.)

In my case I got both clutch and tranny problems.

Re: tranny problems or clutch???

4th and 5th gens are known for the 5th gear grinding a bit on quick shifts as they get older. Like ragedx said, the easiest fix is simply to slow down the 4-5 shift a touch, and it'll be fine.
