Odd issue with my 5th gen JDM BB6

I'm hoping someone can give some insight on this one because I am stumped.

Problem: When I turn my A/C on it causes my battery light and this weird adjacent light to come on that I think is an exhaust overtemp (catalytic converter?) light. From what I've been able to find it is an indication light that is only on JDM Preludes. If I idle the car up to or over 3k RPM the lights will go out. Also, they come back on immediately upon returning to normal idle. The A/C will not get cold either (ice cold before this issue started).

I have shorted the connector in the passenger floorboard hoping to get a code or two. All I got was 4 codes off of my D4 light (5, 8, 16, 23) and 2 codes from the ABS light (53 and 81). No codes given by the check engine light nor has it come on at all.

Other than the lights illuminating and the A/C not getting cold there are NO other changes! Same performance, idle, sound, throttle response, operating temp, etc... All I can think to do is to disco the battery for 15 minutes or so and reconnect while crossing my fingers that it is just a weird freak incident that will "go away!" <---not holding my breath for that one!

Any insight anyone could provide would be appreciated.

Your alternator may not be charging the battery at maximum capacity.

there's a way to check how many amps your charging but you'll have to look it up - I unfortunately don't remember off the top of my head.

i've never seen that second light

It just might be your alternator.
I just bought a prelude that is doing almost the same thing.
Mine has a AEM pulley on the Alt that I need to rip out. (stupid aem)

I just have my HID lights go off at 3k+ rpm and battery light come on.

your a/c problem might be something else..not sure.

Like everyone said, most likely your alternator.

Re: Odd issue with my 5th gen JDM BB6

Thanks for the replies...

Well, pulled the alternator and it tested good. Cap check on the battery was also good. Was hoping one of those would be the culprit...

The last thing I did before before this started was I serviced the A/C with 134-A. I did it correctly with a guage, didn't overservice, etc... I decided to bleed off the 134-a that I serviced in the off chance that I could reverse the symptoms. To my amazement it worked! But now my WTF meter is off the scale and am about to study the wiring diagrams for clues.

Current: Bled the 134-a = Lights are off, A/C is not cooling (because of very low 134-A), everything else is working/running as it should be. Is there maybe a valve that is faulty in the high pressure side of the A/C system I could investigate that might cause this? Maybe a situation where high pressure that cannot be relieved causes this? Shot in the dark...

Thanks again for any insight.

Re: Odd issue with my 5th gen JDM BB6

For anyone that comes across this, I'll post the ultimate resolution. Hope it helps someone...

The problem was an alternator, bad luck was the complicating factor. The alt was the first thing I changed but it just so happened to be a bad one out of the box. I assumed that box was checked so I pursued other things. Overall though, I can't complain. I know the electrical system like a mofo now thanks to this.

Thanks again to anyone who posted on this thread or PM'd me regarding it.
