Anyone ever seen this? Pics inside

I believe this is my rear lower sway bar? I looked under there today and this is what I saw.

I have a few questions:

1. Has anyone seen this before?
2. How did this happen?
3. Is this safe to drive on?
4. Where can I find an upgraded part for this so it won't break again?

Progressive makes an upgraded rear sway bar - or you can purchase another from your local Honda dealership.

I've honestly never seen this happen....

Haha wow, I've never seen that happen, broken endlinks yes, but not the actual swaybar breaking. You're fine to drive on it, your car just won't handle as well as it should. Maybe just take the broken swaybar off until you get a new one just so pieces of it don't fall off while you're driving or something.

This would be a great time to replace front an rear with tannabe sway bars :)

I like my Tanabe set, a bit expensive together unless you have a hook up. Fit well and do what they're meant to do...

that's what I have
suspension techniques sux and you know it. progress for the mother ****in win. no but seriously any sway bar will be better then stock. progress makes the biggest one but as said, requires custom endlinks. all the other ones you can do with stock endlinks.

ps: i like your tires.

Re: Anyone ever seen this? Pics inside

A broken sway bar is a rare occurrence.
I am sure the the person who may have been a previous owner when this damaging mishap occurred that caused the weakening and eventual failure of your rod would have known what caused the damage. The only thing worse then a completely broken part, is a partially damaged part that is effecting the handling performance of your car in a negative but hard to detect way.So for that reason ,I would look at this parts finial break down as a good thing. I would have someone take a look at the other components of your rear suspension to make sure their are not some other damages because the impact that damaged that bar was not a trivial one.I would just buy a new stock one because the stock one is designed to work with the other components of your car and doing other wise more then likely will have a negative impact on your cars performance unless you have some grand plan in store to totally re-engineer your entire suspension system.

South Bay Honda - Honda Automotive Parts Store

After installing your new bar, if you want to tweak the handling of your car to fit the way you personal like your car to respond to your inputs ,you can accomplish that task simply and cheaply by varying the tire pressures.
Here is what I did on my present and previous cars for example to make my cars fit my personal driving taste when on the street.

1st gen Accord LX hatch back :Sorry but its been to long and I can't remember?

2nd gen Prelude:
stock : 28F,26R (Honda purposely gave the back tires a lower pressure to help the car rotate its back end around the corner)
my car: 30F,26R (I wanted even more over steer)

5th gen Prelude:
stock: 32F,32R
My car:32F,34R (Thanks to ATTS, my front tire grip is so good that I feel the need for a bit more under steer in the rear to keep the rear end planted which is the opposite of the problem I had on my 2nd gen Prelude so I bumped my rear air pressure up by 2 lbs.)

note:Having a little under steer on a street driven car can be a life saver because regaining control of your car if the front wheels break traction is a lot easer then when the back end of the car gets out of control and starts to come around. This is why I suggest only minor adjustments to your cars handling if you choose to make any.I hope you will take this bit of advise from a 3x Honda owner whos has never ditched his car.

OMG example of the downside of over steer:

ok we all get it, we know you love the stock handling of a prelude.. specifically the SH. yeah, it's an amazing piece of technology way ahead of its time and you're an incredible salesman for it. almost as good as obama is at selling America. but i digress....

if you know anything about suspension theory, you'd know that tiny rear (hollow nonetheless) sway bar does little compared to the much larger front sway bar. stuffer front ends/softer back ends cause understeer. nearly ALL cars from the factory generally come more prone to understeer. yes even your high powered V8's why? because it's easier to control then oversteer for inexperienced drivers. stiffer back ends/softer front ends make for more oversteer. yes the prelude has surprisingly neutral handling for its weight distribution. especially the SH. but it's still designed with some understeer. a thicker, solid, rear sway bar actually brings it much closer to more neutral handling characteristics. that is also why many 4th gen owners report improved (or rather more neutral handling) with the front sway bar removed.

consider this. many moons ago, before i got my upgrades suspension and i was riding on the stock replacement tokicos. i had the progress rear sway bar and nothing else (stock wheels and some crappy summer/rain tires) i managed to average .92g. stock prelude is (non SH) .88g. a .04 improvement. none of my readings were below .90. granted this is not with perfect time keeping like you'd find at a track designed for such purposes. but when you consider none of the readings were below .90. i think that tells you it's a solid improvement across the board. a negative impact????

now with my greatly improved coilover setup, my butt accelerometer is measuring .98g-1.0g. i haven't gotten a legitimate measurement yet. it's REALLY hard to find a roundabout in germany....... lol, i kid... i just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. but i can say back end is mega stiff compared to the front end. and she is as neutral as she can get when it comes to handling. a negative impact?? far from it.

so, with all that said, us NON-SH drivers don't get the luxury of ATTS to help corner. so we have to do other things to make it better. and it's a proven fact, stiffer rear sway bars (or both), even with stock springs and shocks, improve handling.

I went ahead and got the tanabe sway bar from horsepowerfreaks.com. I didn't want to mess with those endlinks that you have to buy with the progress bar.
