Problems with 2001 Prelude SE (Base)

Hi there,

The main problem is that my Prelude isn't starting anymore. The timing belt was replaced, the water pump replaced, and the battery brand new. The past week it has been fine since I purchased it from a private seller, now it doesn't want to start.

I turn the key with the clutch in fully, the parking brake released, and the gearbox in neutral and the car just hums at me when I push in the ignition. It can do this 10-20 times, then it will just decide to start on the 21st attempt for example. Any idea what this is?

In addition, sometimes I am driving the lude and at a stop light in neutral the car will be running at 1100RPM idle, other times it will be at 600RPM idle...

Finally, the coolant gauge was off the scale (below it not over it past the red zone) should I be concerned?

Thanks,
TheHighRoad

I don't know how to fix this problem but check your temperature when you're looking at your idle. If the car is hot it will run at a lower RPM than when it's just started.

Starting issue is probably the ignition switch. The idle and overheating problem is more than likely the coolant system wasn't bled properly when the water pump was replaced. I recommend a new thermostat and then unloosen the bleeder valve and add the coolsnt to the system while off. And cold. Close the bleeder when it starts to come out in a steady stream. Then start the car and let it idle with the cap off and add more coolant as needed. When no more bubbles are present go have fun. Pm if you need more help.
