How far with auto?

How many miles have you guys gone on your auto before any trouble? Also include driving habbit. Picked up a 98 Base auto with 86k miles not long ago for the wife. It's not giving us any problems, but I don't want to keep it if the trans could go at any time and the wife does not want a 5-speed car. I see everyone dogging the auto's, but really, how far have some of you gone with one?

Re: How far with auto?

Thats the funny thing about those damn autos, they either last for ****ing ever or break down inside of 100k it seems...luck of the draw almost, although I'd put money that driving habits about 75% of what determines how long it lasts.

I have a 5spd so

Although I did have a CB7 before my lude with 160k and the auto tranny was fine...and I beat the ever loving piss out of that thing (it was my first car and I was 16 and stupid...everything from neutral popping it to break traction, to shifting from I to II to D3 and into D4 while flooring it.)

Re: How far with auto?

I know that mines a 4th gen 92, but... 263,000 and still runs like a champ. In fact, mine is an auto and I still get it over 100 every once in a great while.

97 Base with 201,500 kms (120,600 miles). Planning to do an auto to manual tranny swap when/if it breaks.

Re: How far with auto?

From what I've read, most people that start having issues early have either abused the sport shift mode or purchased it from someone who has.

Re: How far with auto?

I really dont understand how ss can speed up failure. Its an electronic switch that activates the shift solenoids. It doest do anything different than when it shifts in D. I get maybe downshifting or holding it till redline adds stress. But using the ss in normal driving is no different than D.

Guess its more relative to how you drive than anything else.

Re: How far with auto?

1997 base, auto, 260,000 km, finally started acting up, did some checking and found one of the shift solenoid connectors barely hanging on and the solenoid itself not working... going to replace the solenoid, and hope she gets better.

Re: How far with auto?

Mine was fine until about 200k then it started slipping slightly between first and second, but only if you got on it. I dealt with it for about another 18,000 miles and finally did the 5 speed swap. It drives great now! I'm ready for another 200k.

Re: How far with auto?

2000 auto.. i'm at 99,509 and not a single issue with my auto (knock on wood). i auto-x (5 times) circuit race (hockenheimring once... i think i did more damage to my engine then the tranny on that trip) and drag race (10-15 times or so) and i've done all these in SS mode. outside the racing, i do some spirited driving. most of the time i'm pretty calm though. i've also kept up on the tranny fluid changes every 15,000 miles.

i'll post for a buddy of mine who's not on this forum. he's got a 2001 auto at about 170,XXX ish... he's slipping a little from 1st to 2nd. it's been doing that for nearly a year now. he doesn't really do any spirited driving. but he does a lot of highway driving. from FL to NY and to IL pretty regularly.
