Icon5 Go easy on me, Im new to imports...

Used to drive nothing but Camaros and Trans Ams. So i'm very new (and late) to the import scene. To get to the point, I bought a 98 Prelude Base, and on the way home the speedo started acting up and the transmission slipped like it was in nuetral and then slammed into gear and the D4 started blinking. From research, im hearing a lot about the VSS having to do with this. WHERE THE HELL IS IT!?!?! I cant find it for the life of me. I apologize if this has been addressed 842352094 times before, i searched and couldnt find a picture or a location. Please help, and dont thrash me yet. Give me a chance to drive the thing first....

Should be on the top of the transmission towards the rear.. sort of under the intake manifold. Wish I had a picture to show you >.<

and yes, does sound like you fell victim to the auto

Re: Go easy on me, Im new to imports...

your problem with the speedo is (most likely) a bad VSS. which i'm not even going to go into where this is located, cuz it sounds like you have MUCH bigger problem on your hands; needing a new tranny.

honda's auto tranny's FTL!!!!

That all depends on what rank you are and what special pays you get.

IE: im an E5 and i get:
Dive Pay
Demo Pay

Im in the NAVY and with a little bit of saving you could afford a new one.

Seriously though it happened at the end of a 3 hour stretch on the highway. The speedo kept dropping to zero, then the D4 started blinking. Only had the tranny slip at the end of an exit because i was stopped on an incline. The car rolled backwards as if in nuetral and then the transmission caught. Changed gears fine the whole time. I hope its just the VSS or im going to be pissed. I just bought the thing yesterday.

Im an E-5 in the army, and have a wife and a 15 month old. How much do trannies usually run? Or would i be better off getting it rebuilt. I have a good rapport with a mechanic out in savannah. I just want the damn thing to work. Im not trying to race. Yet...

LOL, I got a wife, 6 year old and 1 year old. Your gonna have to check craigslist, I have seen them in this area pretty cheap.. Like 500-1000. It usually varies but money talks.. Man i would get a 5 speed.

yeah, and how labor intensive is an M5 swap? I'd love to have a standard transmission but I'm on a VERY limited budget...

The auto to manual swap is pretty easy if you have experience on cars.. its nothing like messing with V8s

Re: Go easy on me, Im new to imports...

My advice to the OP; DON'T bother getting your auto tranny rebuilt, it will just fail again, I can guarantee you that. H23/H22 manual trannies aren't too expensive, I let one go with a new clutch and flywheel for $300 not too long ago. Be patient and you'll find what you need.

I agree with that 100%. Even tho I am the not-so-proud owner of an auto myself, I can tell you right now that once it fails, I'll give not so much as a thought to getting it rebuilt. Once it fails, swap is the only way to go.

Welcome! All car owners are welcome. I'm a T/A fan myself, currently a proud owner of a 2004 GTO, so you're among open minded people. It's lack of vision we frown upon. Stick around you'll see what I'm talking about. Good Stuff!

The only thing we ask is an A55LOAD of pictures of your prelude! The rest is easy ROFL! Swap the tranny and the rest will fall into place.

It's a shame that his first Honda is a Prelude. Not that Preludes are bad cars, it's just that owning a Prelude is like marriage; If you're in it for the long haul because you love the b!tch, then you're fine doing what it takes to keep it in harmony... if you're in it for the cheap thrills, you'll be left with a bad taste in your mouth and an empty wallet.

Welcome to PZ though. Hopefully it's nothing terribly serious for you to get her running fine again.

I've always been a prelude fan since a friend of mine took me for a ride in his, and i understand the "marriage" idea you are talking about. It is very similar with guys who run LT-1 motors in their T/A's. Anyway, I also admire the grammar nazi deal. I am definately a grammar nazi as well.

Re: Go easy on me, Im new to imports...

Ft Stewart, but I live out in the Pooler / Godley Station area. I see you're in Decatur. That's like 4 hours away, isn't it? Either way, If replacing the VSS doesn't remedy the problem it looks like I'll be saving for a manual transmission. I'm assuming twokexlv6coupe is up in Jersey. That's too bad. I'd pick up that H23 in a heartbeat.

Re: Go easy on me, Im new to imports...

I'll preface this by saying I am no expert but I have been in your situation and I would first get the VSS replaced before worrying about the transmission.

Why? Because when my VSS screws up, it does effect my transmission and will do exactly as yours does. It will shift on its own according to the speed reading on the speedo at times (not all the time), and will throw it into neutral a lot when it gets a bad reading. It is not my transmission, as it works just great when my speedo works. Sometimes its as bad as to throw me back and forth between 1st and 4th while at a stop light. Not good for your transmission at all, but its not the tranny failing (yet). It will even stall me out or do a lot of other odd things. When my speedo/vss works, it shifts like butter.

Do a swap when you have the cash (because driving a manual is more fun) but fix your speedo issue before condemning the whole transmission, trust me.

Re: Go easy on me, Im new to imports...

Thanks for the little write up ascetic. I havent condemned the transmission just yet. It shifted great until the speedo when schizo so after research i prayed it was just the sensor. I started the car today after it sitting over the weekend just to keep the battery juiced, no blinking lights. Shifted the trans slowly into reverse down to I and back up to park, letting it idle in each gear to see if there was anything funky going on. Seemed just fine. Im still keeping my fingers crossed but hopefully we're both right. Im picking up a new vss in a few days. Until then.....

Another T/A - Camaro fan! About time! A few of us on here love cars, not just Preludes. Welcome to the forums!

You are going about it the right way. A tranny swap is nothing to joke about. They can get complicated and expensive fast (as with anything you do to a Prelude). Good luck and if you have any questions please ask us. There are plenty of people on here willing to help.

Mine did the same thing for over a year when I finally got rid of it and did the five speed swap. Soo much better now. Its like a whole new car. I did the swap myself in my driveway and it wasn't too bad.

Yeah man, its real easy. I did it in like 10 minutes including time to find the thing. Its almost underneath where the intake mates up with the intake manifold, by the firewall. I had to disconnect my CAI and there it was. I'll take some pis shortly and post them for ya.
