too much oil?

My oil check light came on earlier today as I was pulling into the mechanic shop anyway, so he checked it out for me and said I was really low on oil (barley any oil on the stick). I went to auto zone and picked up a quart of oil and put it. now the oil is higher over the maximum line on the stick. Now i'm pretty new to doing my own work on the car and is there any issues that can happen with the oil being too high? should I just go get the oil changed?

Re: too much oil?

i'm hoping the mechanic waited for the oil to settle back down into the oil pan before checking??
but get an oil change done anyways because it's good for it :D

i got my oil changed around 3k ago at the dealer, guess my ludes burning oil not rly suprised considering it has 161k on her although the previous owner swapped in the new motor im not sure how many miles are on that..

I just went to check it and at first while the car was cold the stick didnt read any oil, so i let it warm up and checked it again and the oil is easily an inch over the 2nd hole

Re: too much oil?

You don't check our cars warm, you don't get an accurate reading. Gotta check it cold and level.

Re: too much oil?

my car goes in a parking garage and my car is on a lil slant, but when it was cold it seemed as if it was still low on oil

Re: too much oil?

well if there was only a tiny bit on the dip stick and then you only put a quart in it it would still be low, it would proly take more like 2 quarts to get it to where it needs to be when it is that low

Re: too much oil?

if you only put 1 quart in while it being barely on the stick, and it's now an inch above the top hole, you're doing something wrong. i'm taking a wild guess and saying, you didn't wipe off the stick and re-check it. also, checking it while its running will do the same. checking immediately after it got done running will give you a false reading as well as some oil will still be in the head. i'll usually give it a minute or 2 to drain back down. and again, always wipe off the stick and re-insert and check again.

also i thought should include, if you're barely registering on the stick and you only put 1 quart, you'll still be to low. the bottom hole is the 1 quart low mark.

(never checked it while the car was running)

naa we wiped off the stick, dipped and checked again and it was still low then we put in the 1 quart( car was cold when we put in the oil, then we let it warm up). this was about 4 hours after i got home from the mechanic who told me i needed more oil. when i got to the mechanic my car was sitting for probably 5 min and maybe one minute while i moved it from the parking spot to the bay. at this point the stick was completely dry (oil light flashed for about a mile before i pulled into the shop).

i dunno why it would flash low then after only 1 quart of fresh oil it would be so much higher above the 2nd hole

"if you're barely registering on the stick and you only put 1 quart, you'll still be to low. the bottom hole is the 1 quart low mark"

exactly what im confused about since it was dry when we checked it and now its way over the 2nd hole

Re: too much oil?

na no black smoke

i went to get the oil changed and they said that the oil pan gasket/seal is probably bad and should be replaced. now does this sound reasonable for why it went so low on oil ?

Re: too much oil?

Preludes burn oil....

If it's been around 3k since your last change - than expect it to be anywhere from 1.5 to 1.5qts low on average.
