Icon5 CEL turned on when I installed my exhaust

So I got my whole cat back exhaust installed today and on the way home my CEL(check engine light) turned on. Is it because of my sensors are whacked out because of the new exhaust or is it because my engine really is messed up? Reply quick please! Thanks in advanced.

It could be that it is whacked out from the new exhaust.

Re: CEL turned on when I installed my exhaust

First try and remember if you installed the sensor on the new exhaust.

Second remember if you connected the sensor back in to the electrical sockets

Third check you cel, could be a code for something else not relating to what you just did.

Re: CEL turned on when I installed my exhaust

Retrieve the code for your CEL. That will tell you exactly what is wrong. Then fix it.

oxygen sensor?
or does the exhaust leak somewhere and/or make the car run too thin?

Re: CEL turned on when I installed my exhaust

It could definitely be something unrelated to the exhaust and you just had the misfortune of it coming on right after you did it. But check to make sure you hooked that sensor back up and that there's no leaks, cracks, holes, etc etc. And /Troll...you've been reported

Re: CEL turned on when I installed my exhaust

Get your CEL read. By either paperclip or OBD reader. Until then, you won't be getting an answer. You shouldn't receive a check engine light from a cat back exhaust install, simple as that. It doesn't change the air flow, it doesn't add horsepower (as much as some would like to believe, no it doesn't....) and it certainly doesn't effect o2 sensors.

Pull the codes and get back to us. Jiffy lube usually has a code reader you can use free, or your autozone also does free code reading.

When you return we can better assess.

You have got to be kidding me right?

You have no o2 sensor after the cutoff. There is NO READING AT THE MUFFLER. A cat back exhaust doesn't effect emissions and there if you have a properly maintained system, there should never be a CEL. Where is the sensor that would set off your CEL?

So let me hear your reasoning how a catback can throw a CEL. Because I'd really love to hear this

My SH is throwing a P0133 for a bad O2 sensor, can headers cause a CEL? Ive got DC headers, and a magnaflow catback.

Most likely it is actually a bad o2 sensor. Yes a header can set it off, but doubtful that it would. Did it only come on after the install?

I honestly dont know... a few days after I bought the car the CEL came on and I had the code pulled... P0133. A few days later I met the previous owner to transfer the title and he just happened to "remember" and mention to me that he had stalled the car once and the CEL came on. He said that he pulled the battery cable to reset the computer.

So I dont know if its been happening regularly or not. I plan on replacing the 02 sensor in the next few days. If the light comes back on, I guess I have other problems.

How hard is it to get to the 02 sensor? I haven't jacked up the car yet to get under it, so Im not sure if this is gonna be a 10 min job or an hour one... anyone know?

Re: CEL turned on when I installed my exhaust

I would try disconnecting the battery for a while then, re connect to reset the code and see if it comes back, after all our OBD II brains are learning CPUs maybe it wasn't used to so much air flow. ;)

Yeah, the previous owner said it came on and he reset the computer... probably right before I bought it. I could clear the code but it would come back. I already have the new 02 sensor, Im just not sure how long it would take me to do so I am waiting for a nicer day when its not a zillion degrees out and Ill go climb under the car and see.
