Yet another top speed thread, but seriously..!

Hey people,

First of all I'd like to say to any potential knuckle heads who want to try what I did, don't.. Or at least do it how I did and go to the TRACK!

Hookay, my prelude will only do an indicated 130-133mph on the speedo...
Is this the actual top speed or am I losing power somewhere?

specs: 5th gen h22a4 w/ catback 2.25" piping exhaust, cold air intake, well maintained motor and car overall.. 18" wheels running 225/40/18

my 4th gen with JDM h22a got to top speed faster because it had the h23 tranny (shorter 5th) but had a governer for 112mph since it was a JDM motor..

my current lude is the 5th gen.
Any top speed run stories? anecdotes?
Again, i don't condone highspeed freeway runs, they are reckless and will get flamed on the forums too..

Re: Yet another top speed thread, but seriously..!

why you say "only"? you dont need it to run those speeds...
stock intake manifold doesnt give you enough air somewhere after 7000rmp, thats one thing.
and second is that there are better transmissions also for prelude.
modding give you acceleration (what is main thing imo) and your car is very near to stock.

Re: Yet another top speed thread, but seriously..!

According to a Car@Driver article that did the speed vs rpm math the car should be going 140 MPH at its 7400 rpm rev limit. By using linear interpolation ,you can come up with a speed of 132.4 mph at the engines peak power of 7k rpm.So if your achieving a top speed of between 130 and 133 mph then your right on the money and probably have a pretty healthy engine. To be honest I have my doubts that you really achieved those speeds on a track unless it was a Nascar type track because I know from driveing through the long straight ,through the corn fields roads of North Carolina, that once you pass 117 mph and up shift to 5th, acceleration slows way down and it takes a long, long time to get to 133 mph.

We made it up to 138 in my friend's completely stock 2001 Prelude back when I was stupid, so I'd stay try a little harder.

Re: Yet another top speed thread, but seriously..!

I had mine to 137 foolin around w/my buddy in his GTI. When I realized I was goin that fast I back it down but it had more room to go. What scared me was how good the car felt. Didn't feel like I was goin anywhere near that fast.

Re: Yet another top speed thread, but seriously..!

I've gone 124MPH on I15 from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas. Obviously not the whole way, just saw a massive stretch of road and said, "What the hell". I had I/H/E with some Yokohama street tires.

Re: Yet another top speed thread, but seriously..!

A couple of things on accuracy of speeds:

The accuracy of the speedo above 100mph isnt that reliable in our preludes. Sure its within the range of about 5%, but that is still about a 10mph difference.

On 18" wheels... The tire/wheel size will offset the accuracy of the speedometer along with tire wear... Even small diameter differences equate to large calculated differences...

Since pictures of speeds are fun. Here's my 3rd gen lude getting popped by radar at speeds on about a 1/4 mile of road from a stop... H22a in it...
