new guy here!!! i need help!!!

Hello everyone I am the new happy and proud owner of a 2000 honda prelude in white all stock with 181k miles on the car. I bought the car knowing it had some electrical issues. Sunroof dosent work and radio dosent work. I recently discoverd a new scary problem.

Well when I was driving I put the car in nuetral and coasted to a stop, as I'm coasting some lights on the gauge cluster turned on and I gave it some gas and they went away but vame back when the rpms were idling. I was stumped...

Today I was driving on the freeway and the tach and spedo start fluctuating from 0 to current rpms/speeds. Eventually dieng to where they rest when the car is off. The ac was runnning and didn't stop and neither did the engine.

The guy I bought the car from told me his mechanic said the engine was leaking oil and some oil got into some harness and that is what is causing the issue. I have no idea what it could be. Can you guys give me any tips or trouble shooting steps to figure out what's going on please!!!

Btw I really dig this car I want to drive it with out worrying about this!!! Oh ya and why dosent my sunroof work???

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

Someone else had the same problem. Turned out to be the distributor.
As for the sunroof. Does it make any noise when trying to open/close. If not then it's more than likely a shot motor. If so then a stripped cable or broken clamp.

^^^ I agree...Fuses would be the first thing I would check. In fact, with most things electrical, check the fuse before you check anything else. If you take it to a shop they'll never tell you its a fuse...they'lll replace another part, and then just list a new fuse in the price. Just a little heads up there.

Re: new guy here!!! i need help!!!

Thanks guys I will check fuses...I didn't think a fuse would cause my car to kill the gauges. Well today I drove the car to work and it died when I left so I figured the battery or alternator. I got a jump and drove to the gas station where it died on me again. Prior to dying the cars guages were fluctuating and eventually fell and then the was sputtering sorta. So I'm thinking alternator??? On the sunroof if I push the button to close you can hear the motor move forward but when you try to open it , it dose nothing. Thanks for the input guys . Anything more is also welcomed.

Someone said something about a distrubitor?...

Re: new guy here!!! i need help!!!

Off topic, have you got your keyboard back yet? That was forever ago!

Kwiklude; can't help you with your sunroof motor, but you need to torque down your battery terminals. The rings cannot be loose or battery not fastened in the tray. I've had two separate cars of mine do the cluster thing, and even the alternator-supercharger whistle when my positive was loose. My friends RX-8 kept dying at the street lights cause of the same problem. The problem was the bolt he had was stripped so he could not torque it down, preowned FTL, car stalled all the way to autozone.

The definition of tight is you have zero play when your terminal contacts with the battery post. About 15-25lbs of torque, one twist more than hand tight. And bolt down the battery. All this "play" is bad and definitely overlooked. And mechanics will never find it, most plug in the scanner while the car is idle and never check the battery, stay stumped and like said above, "guess."

If it's not the problem, know when you do this you will eliminate this future problem. Hope this helps.

Re: new guy here!!! i need help!!!

checked the terminals and they were both loose! thanks for the tip!!! battery is charging in garage over night, tommorow when i go to the dmv to transfer tittle i will fasten the **** out of them.

Question. I want to make big power in my prelude. Is the H22 a good motor for that goal via boost? OR should i go with a F22 or F23? Goals are 400whp range.
