Foreign Object in EGR Port Plugs

I was cleaning out my EGR port plugs when a drill bit broke off and fell into an EGR port.. I'm gonna assume the worst and not start the car until I have the broken piece in my hand and out of there.
Any idea's on how to get it out? It's a good inch or so long. I think I'm gonna have to take off the whole intake manifold.

Re: Foreign Object in EGR Port Plugs

take off the intake manifold. Do NOT start the car. when the bolts are loose and you're backing the manifold away from the motor, it might not be a bad idea to slide a piece of paper or something between the manifold and the cylinder head. you wouldn't want that bit shaking around and droping into the head.

good luck

Re: Foreign Object in EGR Port Plugs

I'm guessing there is a possibility that the drill piece might have already slid into the head...?

Re: Foreign Object in EGR Port Plugs

not necessarily. just be careful removing the manifold and try to locate the piece.

"drain coolant. remove intake, lower rad hose, throttle cable, brake booster line, all vac lines, injector clips and IACV connector, fuel line (banjo bolt on fuel rail), fuel return line, evap hose, (if its H22/23) IAB connector. then the 4 nuts on the top side of the mani, and 5 on the bottom, and the one bracket underneath it bolted to the block."-twokexlv6coupe

i found this quote on another thread on the easiest way to remove the IM. Anything else I need to know before I try to remove the IM?

Re: Foreign Object in EGR Port Plugs

yea it's way in there. I've already tried a magnet.
i'm gonna try taking off the top half of the IM and try puttin a magnet in through there. crossing my fingers this will get it out.
if the intake manifold is a passageway for air to get into the cylinders, how/why is there soot and carbon in there?

Re: Foreign Object in EGR Port Plugs

i got it out! I removed the top half of the intake mani. That gave me access to the openings of the tube of the lower half of the mani. I put a stick with a magnet end and fished around a little bit. voila.

thanks for all the feedback guys! don't yall just love the feeling of accomplishment when you're working on your lude and something goes right for once?

EGR = Exhaust Gas Re-circulation. Why re-circulate exhaust?...for emissions purposes. Fine Honda engineering at it's best. (sarcasm)

Re: Foreign Object in EGR Port Plugs

Wasn't on a manifold, but I epoxied and molybdenum magnet to a piece of copper wire to fish out a drill bit once--worked real well in small passages.
