I want to do some fun stuff to my 97 auto.

Ok so I've come to the conclusion that I can't afford to sell my auto and get a 5spd yet nor can I afford to pay for swap parts or labor. However, my drive (no pun intended) for making my Prelude sweet is killing me and I really want to do something to it. I don't want to do any modifications mechanically to it due to the fact that it's an automatic, but I do want to make some visual adjustments to it. Do you guys have any ideas or suggestions for me? I'm hoping to get a manual in a year or two so I'm only really interested in things that would be easily transferred over to my new 5th gen when I get it.

Please and thank you PZ :)

Isn't a 97 already a 5th gen?

Re: I want to do some fun stuff to my 97 auto.

Yeah but it's auto. I'm buying a manual in a year. I want to do some stuff to my car than i can still transfer over in a year when I get the new car. Nothing mechanical though because if I upgrade anything mechanically, I'll shorten the life of my already poor transmission.

Yeah I was thinking about getting these: SSR Type C Wheel 16x7.0 4x100

How hard are window visors and headlights to install/uninstall?

@Psychochimp I'm from Oklahoma :/

Window visors are a breeze and headlights are too but not as easy. Heres a diy man for headlights. Write Up: Remove Bumper, Fender, and Door! with Pics - Honda Prelude Forum - Prelude Online.com

how can you not afford to sell the auto and get a 5spd. Prices of cars aren't gonna change that much

And those wheels say 4x100 but are 5 lug. Am I missing something???

$1800? They're $450. And UPSluder has those exact rims. I asked him which one's he has cuz I liked 'em. And most of the ludes in my area are around 5-7 grand. I can't sell mine for more than 3.

Oh wow, I definitely did not see that. Well damn.
I was looking at some floor mats and some window visors. Are there any exterior things I could do that wouldn't be like a grand?

Re: I want to do some fun stuff to my 97 auto.

I'm currently doing the same thing as you. Budget modding the look of my car. Look into lamin x film to tint your fogs or tails certain colors if you like that. Its removable and inexpensive. Lowering springs are good too. Jdm emblems if your car is a good color for a red emblem lol

Theres lots if stuff. Pimp out your interior to lol

Re: I want to do some fun stuff to my 97 auto.

I have a red lude. I'm probably going to order a pair of amber LEDs to replace the amber filter in my tail lights so the tail lights look more clean. Here's the thread I saw it on: EXT: 5th Gen DIY Cleared Out Tail Lights (Amber Removal). I can get a pair of those LED's for 10 bucks :P So that's a pretty neat and cheap mod.

Are fog's easy to install/uninstall?

Yes but coilover are also alot more expensive. Hes trying to buy cheap stuff for now.

Anyways. Op, have you looked into a lip kit? Or even a oem or wings west front lip. I remember putting the oem front lip on my car and just thought it looked amazing. Lol.

Or you can go for some depo headlights like youve mentioned. Paint your current wheels, window tint, ebay v2 fogs. But to be honest man, I would save the money. You may need it down the road. If your still paying on your car, save money to pay it off. Or if not, save it for 5spd swap parts. For a grand you can get almost everything you need for the swap minus the trans.

Re: I want to do some fun stuff to my 97 auto.

Nice to have another auto 5th gen lude!
ur main priority is to tek care of that tranny as much as possible
since ur an auto i would say do the following things:
1) tranny cooler ( cant afford to **** up ur trans u kno ! )

PS dont use aftermarket tranny fluid or an kind of tranny flush or any **** like dat ok!
spend the money an buy Honda ATF. DONT **** Wid ANYTHING ELSE OK!!!!

2) suspension ( springs, struts, upper bars an rear lower)
3) tires an rims (17in is ideal in my opinion
4) hid's an depo headlights an fogs
5) paint VC and clean up under the hood
6) stereo upgrade (FYI ur gonna have to run new wires to by pass the AFBS)
7) simple body kit Ww or oem or ebay ABS plastic
NOW im gonna get flamed for sayin this but u cud also...
8) ebay header
9) cat-back exhaust with cat-converter o2 mod
10) ebay intake
11) nology wires an a new dizzy cap

of course 8-11 is jus wut i wud do
but i kno u said u didnt want to do any mechanical work to it

when you lower the springs, all that is off from damping length - it becomes too hard - the suspension wont work as good as it should
well imo atleast ...I like more my new coilovers than just lowering springs. The whole car is much more fun to drive now.

Re: I want to do some fun stuff to my 97 auto.

if u gonna sell the car then just put the damn springs on it to lower its height a bit...
If u gonna keep it and do a swap later, then get the coilovers, they are adjustable and u'll love em, i personally like my ride stiff and and all that ish...

p.s. sway bars ;)

If you plan on getting an manual in a year don't do nothing. Save your money and do the mods on the newer lude. Don't wast your time doing it twice. IMO. Good luck with everything.

Re: I want to do some fun stuff to my 97 auto.

Mods under a grand-

•jdm fogs-real $350. Replicas-$60

•Retrofitted new headlights(black depo headlights $200 retrofit $500-$700) keep old lights

•S2000 seats-$depends

•S2000 or dc5 itr steering wheel $350-$400

If you're gonna get a 5th gen then just keep all the stock stuff so you can change it back when you get the new one.. Or you could just save up for a new one

I wouldn't get a lip kit because you might get a different color

And real wheels don't cost under a grand.. You could save up a little more and buy a nice set of good used forged wheels

Yeah I have an aftermarket stereo head right now and it was a pretty simple install. I'm going to put in a 12" sub soon, just trying to figure out how to install it.

I also have thought about keeping my 5th gen and doing a swap but there's a dent in the hood and on the trunk and a pretty bad scrape on the back passenger side wheel base. Even if I ordered a new hood/trunk/rear fender, I'd have to paint them, even then, they'd be a different color than my red since it's been on the car for 14 years. To get everything congruent color wise, I'd have to do a total paint job and would kill my wallet.

Would it be cheaper to keep the car and fix it and give everything paint and then do a swap, or to sell it and hope to find a cleaner manual?

Re: I want to do some fun stuff to my 97 auto.

Check my lude...You can do headlights, stereo, door speakers, rims/wheels...heck you can even do engine stuff. So long as you get a 5g manual, you can transfer everything over. And btw, you don't have to take out the door and fender to do headlights. Check my MR thread in my sig vvvvvvv . Auto's aren't bad. They're just not as fun as 5spds. Trust me, I want mine to be a 5spd. But Im wasn't going to pass up the deal I had with my current 5g. My .02/humble opinion (whatever you would like to call it) is that you should stick with the auto. Call me crazy. You can even call me stupid. But so long as you don't try to drive it like a manual EVERY time you drive it, you should be fine. Talk to me, talk to Beaker(moderator), there's quite a few that will tell you. 97-98 are the most prone to tranny failure(but at the same time, its still a low percentage that it will fail due to defect.) So, just drive it sensibly. You can still have fun in an auto, and its STILL A PRELUDE...despite what some might say. Are 5spds always more exciting? OH YEA. But that doesn't mean that you should sell a perfectly good prelude(especially if you got a good deal on a relatively nice car) just because its an auto.(on the other hand, if its a piece a crap in the first place, then maybe you should just sell it and look for a cleaner manual.) I could probably go on all day about why automatics are so over-played-down. But I won't. PM me if you wanna hear more..but I doubt you do. Good luck on Y O U R decision, whatever it may be.
