type S question

prelude newbie here, just doing some research before i go an buy one.
does the type S come in an automatic?

also, i have a b16 crx sir, and all b16's seem to have a common leak in the cam and vtec seal. i went to look at a prelude and it seemed to have a leak in the same area - do H22's suffer from this aswell?

does there happen to be a buyers guide on this forum?

all advice appreciated,
dave

If you live in America, unless you import one, you won't get a Type S but to answer your question, they were all Manual. I've never known any leaks to be a problem. This might help you some.

i live in ireland, and there's a few type S preludes around if you are patient. [they are all imports].

the link you gave is useful, but i'm well used to buying cars now. i was more looking for common things to look for like rust locations, steering play, idle, temperature, brakes, etc...

Well, like any Honda, rust likes to get around the rear 1/4 panel but I've only seen like 1 5th en like that, and you could see it had been neglected. Steering is very nice (Especially a Type S/SH in America, since they have the ATTS) but a base model is stil very exceptional. Idle is fine, unless you have like stage 3 cams in it, then it's a little rough, especially if it's not tuned. Brakes are good, just keep pads, rotors, and fluid and you'll stop. The "Oh sh!t" handle tends to come loose but just screw it back in with a phillips head and you're good. Many 5th gens I've been in, you had to feed the seatbelt back in, cause it tends to hang up but is fully operable when worn. The flap over the mirrors in the sun visors break easily. Look at one nad you'll see what I mean. Honda tends to have a problem with water leaking in the trunk. Usually due to backed up sunroof drain lines, or the antenna (but a 5th gen has it in the window so no worries). Other than that, there's not really any common problems, other than H22's tend to use more oil than a lot of engines,an dobviously, VTEC uses more gas when engaged.

I have found that the gas is the biggest problem you'll find. I had a 90 honda accord(just sold today/owned 4 years.) and it got nearly 300 miles/tank on a good week. I now only get about 250/tank and do mostly highway driving(71mph). Plus, I use only premium.
