Tranny Fluid gone WILD. 5spd SH questions

Hey guys,

So I just changed the tranny fluid in me new 5th gen type SH. I got this car about 3 weeks ago and have been doing regular/preventative maintenance on it since. It's at 106k miles, (time for a timing belt, YAY!) but I've been postponing that a bit.

I got 3 quarts of honda MTF fluid btw, which I find super thin for a gear oil. I thought gear oil for manuals was supposed to be thick!!? like 80 90w? This stuff is as thin as motor oil if not thinner.

That's basically my question, why is it so damn thin? and would I do fine adding a bit of heavy weight gear oil into the mix?

Thanks!

Re: Tranny Fluid gone WILD. 5spd SH questions

look in your manual it tells you. tranny fluid had the same think-ness (i forgot the right word) as 10w30. you can use 10-30 as a substitute for a little bit according to the manual. only use honda tranny fluid in your prelude. an i don't think its a good idea to mix gear fluids, but i could be wrong.

Just like he said, use only Honda MTF and ATF for the ATTS.

if you look up 92 93 94 4th gens it says that 10 30 is ok if you look at 95 and newer it says that it can be used temporarily .. in my 93 when i built my first motor i used 10 30 in the trans and almost right away my trans started grinding 2nd and 3rd pretty bad when you shifted hard . i drained it then flushed it with some fresh honda mtf and filled it with honda mtf the grinds went away right away with no more grinding afterwards .. i think honda realized that the 10 30 they said was ok wasnt cutting it . so they then listed it as ok for temporary use .. take it from me use honda mtf ive been down this road before ..

Don't know about you but I use GM Synchromesh tranny fluid. Sh*tz amazing! Reduced/fixed my 3 gear grind by so much.

not this again

it's fine if you think it works for you but I really cringe thinking these new kids will start using other than honda MTF and F up their tranys. I really don't want to deal with the influx of "what's wrong with my transmission?" threads.

haha! I thought the last one (the kid that asked about launching the auto) was pretty amusing myself. Besides - the last time I changed the fluid in my H tranny I just put some 10w-30 in it and called it good. The 5mt is stronger than people give it credit for.

I'm telling you. Synchromesh. Gives you +50hp. It's like NOS all the time. They call it Turbo in a bottle ;)
