5 Speed Swap Complete!!

I am proud to announce that my 5 speed swap project is Finally complete!! It was a big project that I had all the parts for last year and was supposed to do it last summer but kept putting it off and putting it off but now it is finally done!

It was a solo project done in my driveway. I did the whole thing by myself over time without a single hand from any helms manual or buddies.(I did however use RomPirate’s 5spd Swap Resource Thread -) http://www.preludepower.com/forums/s...=302157I'm not saying it was easy, (because it wasn't) I'm just proud that I finally successfully accomplished a huge project that I was putting off for so long! I do have miscellaneous pictures of things throughout the build that I could post later if anyone would like.

I have drove about 280 miles since the swap, and every thing is nice and smooth and working properly. No weird noises or rattles, the clutch grabs nice. I do still have the auto TCM plugged in and I am still using my original auto ECU, so the check engine light is on with Automatic transmission control malfunction codes, but other than that, everything is mint!

Also while the car was apart I changed both lower ball joints (that were shot), sway bar bushings, end links, new oil pan -(mine was leaking like a siv plus the drain plug was stripped bad), rear main seal, both axle seals, NGK plugs and wire set-the blue ones, 11lb lightweight flywheel, stage one racing clutch, cross drilled rotors for all 4 wheels, new Honda brake pads all around. Alarm and remote start- {soon to be SmartStart! },

I got very lucky last year and came across a doner car that someone wanted to get rid of the parts from as quick as possible for killer prices. (the car was up for repo and in hiding, so he just wanted to sell as many parts as he could before the repo man found it, lol) I got 95% of the parts I needed and he drove almost 6 hrs (he thought it would only take 3 1/2, and was pissed)to deliver them to my ft door for $500! With everything else including everything above, I think the whole swap only cost me about $1000, maybe less, plus a whole lot of blood sweat and tears.

All I have to do now is get the check engine light out. I have a 5 speed ECU but I do NOT have the RED key that is supposed to come with the car when new. I never had one. So if the I try and use the 5 speed ECU it will not start the car because you have to program the new ECU to read the immobilizer code that is in the chip that is in your key. You would need to bring your car to Honda for them to program the new ECU, BUT,.....they need the "red" key to do that, so that option is out for me.

I do know a locksmith, I already talked to him, and he can erase the codes in my 2 keys now, erase the codes in the 5 speed ECU I have, and reprogram them over with new codes from scratch with a brand new "red" key. So, I would have the 5 speed ECU, my two original keys, a new red key, and he said he would make 2 additional keys. But,..... he wants to charge me, he said like around $300.

I am going to try the 5 speed ECU conversion, where I convert my ECU into a 5 speed one by taking it apart and moving a resistor from one side of the circuit board to the other. I'm going to have to cross my fingers and hope that it will work and clear the light. Otherwise it looks like I'll have to dish out $300.

I'm so glad that now I can go ripping through the gears and really feel the VTEC kick in that you never really felt as an automatic. It is Soo much better now!! :mission accomplished:

Here is my first attempt to post pics - (its been a while and I forgot how)

This first one is of the new tranny finally going in! I struggled a good couple hours wiggling that thing in there, but finally it fit like a glove..

This one is out with the old.

New tranny In with the new

Work in progress

Pic of the tranny out with new oil pan and rear main seal- it was leaking bad too

lightweight flywheel

flywheel installed

Clutch installed

cross drilled rotors- brembo used 99 Prelude rotors off eBay- $28 for ft pair shipped from Cali to CT! - they came rusty and warped as hell- but I machined them at work and they came out mint. What a deal .

Before:

After:

Well I figured out how to load pictures. I'll start with these for now I have a lot more I could post later.
**edit** more pics

Re: 5 Speed Swap Complete!!

CONGRATS! I have an AT and I really wanna do the swap, but right now I don't have the resources, or even a driveway, to do it in. I will just have to live the glory vicariously through you. Enjoy it, mate. Nothing is sweeter than something you really have to work hard too get.

That is awesome. I felt all giddy when I put the clutch pedal in the other day lol.

I too am doing the project solo (even the tranny rebuild) and i only have a apartment parking lot to work in, with people asking what I'm doing every 15 mins.

Re: 5 Speed Swap Complete!!

Pics are now posted for anyone who did not see. I can post more later too.

Thank you to everyone who congratulated me or offerd to help.
This swap showed me that if you want something bad enough, and work hard enough, and put your mind to it almost anything is possible!

How long did it take me? Well, I had installed the 5 speed brake pedal, clutch pedal(with the nOrmal third upper mounting hole), master cylinder, reservoir, and ran all the hydraulic lines like 10 months ago. It took me a couple of weekends to do a little at a time. I think this was defiantly the hardest part of the project. I did as much as I could with still being able to drive it. So for the longest time I was driving an automatic lude with an installed functioning clutch pedal lol.

I drove it all the way till Memorial Day weekend. Thought it would be the perfect time finally. I didn't have my son, 3 day weekend and no plans except for BBQ's and partys that I turned down. I drove it home from work on Fri and starting unplugging everything, took out the battery and air intake, removed the console inside and shifter. Saturday, at about 11:30 I jacked it up and started working on it. The tranny was out by 5 or 6.
I realized that I had forgot to get a new rear main seal and I was screwed because it was a holiday weekend and Honda wasn't open till Tues. It was then that I realized the new tranny was not going back in this weekend.
So I did other things I had to do like change the oil pan and little prep work and some wiring. Sunday I went quadding all day with 12 friends like we always do every other Sun. Monday did little things here and there and still got to go to a few BBQ's.

Tues after work I popped in the new rear main seal.

The weekend after I was very busy and didn't have time to even touch it. But I did notice the new tranny was missing a bracket that held the shift cables in place and I had to order it, along with the clips that hold them there. I also had to order the lower starter bolt because it needs to be a lot longer than the auto starter bolt was.

A whole other week went by and then the next Sat I put the tranny back in and everything back together, but the bracket didn't come in yet.

Tues the bracket came and everything was pretty much done except for the intake tube and battery and the wiring to the clutch shut off switch.

My goal was to finish by the Marcos Dairy meet that was that Sat and reveal the new swapped lude there, but my boss said at the last min that he needed me bad and I had to work. (even though I haven't worked a Sat in over 3 years, BS!) I was pissed, but oh well. So the next day, which was Fathers Day, I put the final last screws in and buttoned up the interior.
So in short, my car was on jack stands from Memorial Day to Fathers Day.

Good luck with your project man! I can only imagine if I did it in a parking lot! I had enough people walking by the house stopping and asking what I was doing. In a parking lot would be crazy!

Re: 5 Speed Swap Complete!!

Pics are up, more to come.

Its been my first complete week of driving my car as a standard back and forth to work, and it feels pretty damn good!! No real issues except sometimes i get an intermittent idle surge. Sometimes it happens hot, and sometimes it does it in the morning cold, but by the time i drive it to work it wont do it any more. It is only a light surge from 800-1500 rpm. I never had idle issues before the swap ever! So I find it very hard to believe that "all of a sudden" my MAF, or fast idle valve or any sensor, just "went bad" while I did the swap. I know I didn't break anything. I never even had any of those sensors unplugged in that whole area at all during the swap, and never dripped a drop of coolant during the swap so I know that's topped off and good. I have heard of people that have done the swap jumping two wires that go to the tranny control module to get rid of this surge. I have not done this yet. Does anyone know about this issue or if that really works or not? And how to fix it.

Also the clutch grabs a little high. Is this normal for most people that do the swap? Or do stock 5 speed 5th gens characteristically grab high? Ive never driven one besides mine.

And The idle never surged at all once today. Maybe when I first started it this morning but, didn't really notice it because I pulled out of my driveway right away and never felt it again, but I'm sure it will come back!

*edit* Its weird, I noticed that the only time the idle will surge is if I slip the clutch a little. Like If I pull up to a parking space and stop the idle will be fine. Then when I put it into reverse to back up into the spot and slip the clutch a little it will start to surge. If I put the clutch in, put it in neutral, just sitting there it will surge. BUT.... If I put it in to 1st gear, drive 20 feet put the clutch in and stop the surge will go away? I'm confused so any info will be helpful. Thanks

Also the clutch grabs a little high. Is this normal for most people that do the swap? Or do stock 5 speed 5th gens characteristically grab high? Ive never driven one besides mine. It drove mint Mon through Wed just grabbed a little high. Then on Thurs I started messing with the push-rod for the master trying to see if i could adjust it to grab lower. . First I had it too loose and it wouldn't grab right, but only when it warmed up. I seemed fine cold, there was also a lot of play in the pedal. Then I put it too tight where there was almost no play in the pedal, and it felt good last night (didn't drive far) and this morning 30 miles down the highway but when I went to get off the highway the pedal was rock hard and could barley push it. I pulled over and it wouldn't go into any gear with the clutch down. I turned it off, it went into gear. As I went to start it with the pedal all the way down down it started grabbing and moving as soon as it started. Which was good in a way so I could inch more onto the shoulder of the road, once I realized I would have to be working down by the pedal with the door wide open with cars flying down the off ramp with my son in the back seat. I was like "F*CK"! plus I would have made it on time to work but it made me late (long story but I almost got fired for being late once).

I had no tools on me except for a Phillips screwdriver, but I was lucky because I only left the adjusting nut hand tight because I had a feeling I would be down there again shortly. Good thing I did or I would have had to get towed or something. Knowing me I would of had to think of some way to hack that nut loose before I would ever call a tow truck. Anyways after still fighting to get the very finger tight lock nut loose I adjusted the rod back to where I originally had it when I first completed the swap, and I was on my merry way with no problems except for the pedal grabbing High. Grabs good just a little high.

And The idle never surged at all once today. Maybe when I first started it this morning but, didn't really notice it because I pulled out of my driveway right away and never felt it again, but I'm sure it will come back!
this may not be the issue but are you using the auto ECU or put in a manual ECU. at the extreme prelude sight if you go all the way down before the pictures to the troubleshoot part it talks about a Idle issue surge. dosent go into details but might be a starting point

Re: 5 Speed Swap Complete!!

Thanks for that link. I never saw that page before. It probably would have been very useful in the early stages of the swap. I am still running the auto ecu and have the check engine light on for auto transmission control malfunction code. I am going to to do the conversion to to manual ecu to fix that problem.

yea there actually a way to make you auto ECU a manual. look at this link
RomPirate’s 5spd Swap Resource Thread - Honda Prelude Forum : Honda Prelude Forums
theres a section on there thats about moving a resistor from one posotion to another and soldering it on and it takes away the CEL and possibly the idle surge so you might want to read it over. dosent seem to complicated. im actually planning on starting my 5 speed swap soon. just finished buying the last few parts i needed.

Thanks man I really appreciate it! Good luck with yours, if you ever end up doing it.

I just installed a JTC Customs adjustable short shifter on it on Saturday. It looks soo much better now. Before my shifter was like up to the middle of the radio, it was like driving a school bus or something lol. Now it is nice and low and the shift throws are shorter and adjusted just right to my liking. I will upload pictures as soon as I get around to transferring them from my camera.

**edit** pics are up

Brand new in the box

Look at the difference in height from the stock one to the JTC Custom one!!

Stock shifter, Way too High!!

Much Better, nice and short!!

Re: 5 Speed Swap Complete!!

I should have done my oil pan gasket.

I have a little little seapage where the rear plate mates with the pan. MY new rear seal was oem brown...yours looks black is it oem?

When you gonna paint those rear calipers?

It is awesome, I love it! That was the same with me. I had 95% of the parts last year and was supposed to get it done last summer. That never happened so I cleaned out my tight ass garage and was gonna do it in there over the winter. But it would be mad tight with not a lot of working space and I would have to get a heater. So I scrapped that idea and planed to do it in the spring in the driveway as soon as it got warm out. I still never got to it until Memorial Day, but now it is finally done!

My OEM one was brown too, but the one I got right from the Honda dealership was black. Sometime it is normal for them to do that and update a part or have a different color

Just did it last weekend, and installed new pads and new cross-drilled rotors to match the front.

Re: 5 Speed Swap Complete!!

Hey man as far as Transmission fluid is do you just have to take of the pan from the auto Transmission and install it on the Manual one? is there a gasket involved and if you can spare any info and what other gaskets might be needed in the swap.

Re: 5 Speed Swap Complete!!

NO swapping of pans. No gasket except for the housing of the transmission which you wont need to do unless you are opening the trans.

Only thing you should replace upon the swap is the rear seal and inspect the oil pan gasket to see if that should be done as well.

Re: 5 Speed Swap Complete!!

Quick question. On my block where the trans would mount there was 44444 stamped on the bottom, any idea what that number relates to?

Re: 5 Speed Swap Complete!!

Oil goes inside the transmission.

There is no pan, it kinda sits in side the trans. There is only a drain/fill bolt.
