AC High End = High Pressure

Just wondering if anyone has encountered this before. My wife's 2001 SH (133K miles) AC was blowing fine but no cold air. My brother and I checked the pressures and charged the system. Now the high end pressure is very high and the low end pressure is within a normal range. After charging the system, her AC compressor cycles on and off in a very short period of time. Of course the cycling causes the RPMs to fluctuate. She is upset about that. Turn the air off and the RPMs stay consistent. My brother has worked on AC systems in various cars at different points in time over the years. He is ten years older than me. He seems to think that the problem is a high end restriction and / or the expansion valve. Has anyone had this problem or know the most common problem(s) in the Prelude?

Re: AC High End = High Pressure

My A/C greatly messes up my rpms and takes away at least 10% of my power at low rpms.

My compressor cycles in a very short period of time too. Just a few min sometimes.

Your brother is spot on.... the expansion valve is just about 90% of the problems when an issue like you describe happens.

Where is the expansion valve (pic, please)? Is it difficult to replace?

Re: AC High End = High Pressure

Thank you LilMsPrelude. Your reputation precedes you. My brother is pretty knowledgeable about vehicles. Me, not quite so much. So the expansion valve is the primary culprit. Would a high end restriction (in the tubing) also be a factor in play here? We / he just wanted to make sure before we just started throwing parts on the car.

mckillio here is an exploded diagram of the expansion valve. I believe it is the part numbered 11.

Re: AC High End = High Pressure

the expansion valve is the restriction. if it's not operating properly and doesn't open enough, the pressure will be higher than it's supposed to be

ayyyyuuuup... what he said.

Even if it is not the only issue with the AC system... it is a part you should be replacing anyways simply due to the likeliehood it IS going to fail.

Re: AC High End = High Pressure

One more question to anyone that has replaced the valve. How invasive is it to get to the valve? It looks to us to be on in interior of the firewall.
