Catalytic Converter

Alright, I did a search to no avail. I am throwing a CEL and had it scanned at Auto Zone, it read to be the catalytic converter. Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket cats? I would like something that doesn't have to be custom welded on or anything fancy. Right now all I could find is an OBX cat which seems to be OEM replacement.

Also, I need it to pass smog when I go get registered.... in Cali. Recommendations?

I used to work for a catalytic converter manufacturer... and as much as I hated them, they made a damn good product. Almost all of their products are high flow cats, and almost all of them are California emissions compliant. The company is Eastern Catalytic, and they make a direct-fit bolt on replacement cat for the 97-01 Prelude. Here is a link to one at innerauto.
Click here. If you want to shop around for it elsewhere... the part number for it is 40383.

humm, I found it on eBay (everywhere online they go for $145), but it says "OBD II Compliant / 49 States (OBD II Converters not legal for sale or use in California)." Whats that about, because I will have to get smogged when I get registered. I'm still a little weary about the AEM SR that came with the car, even with the CARB sticker.

possible it is the secondary O2 sensor that has crapped out on you..that is more common with hondas and possibly cheaper to replace...what was the code?

Did you get Code(s) P0137, P0138, or P0141 along with it? If not, you may want to verify it is not a false indication. Otherwise, you gotta replace the Cat. It could also be an exhaust leak or problem you can see once you take the Cat out and look at it.

No, I had it scanned at Autozone and that is the only number that came up. I'm pretty sure it is the cat. Sounds horrible when I start the car and when I'm accelerating while in low RPMs. Sounds like it gonna fall off it rattles so much, kinda like a muffler on a cheap exhaust.

thats no good. I was hopin there was a cheaper fix. In my experience, it's not too often the cat goes bad. I guess it has to happen occasionally though

dam, the eastern cats are "FI" so no-no for cali. i'll just find an OEM cat. i don't understand the difference between a cat legal for cal, and one thats not. a catalytic converter is a catalytic converter, all do the same thing i thought.

While it's true that it can't hurt to check/replace the o2 sensor, it sounds like it is almost definitely your cat. Get under your car and bang on the cat and see if it sounds like there is stuff rattling around in there. That rattling you are hearing is almost definitely the "honeycomb(s)" in your cat broken up.

Hey bro, sorry about all those issues you had. I feel like an ass for recommending it... although I'm fairly sure that it'll serve you well... Like I said, when I worked there, they were much nicer (the ones I did at least :-P). I'll post some pics I found on my cell phone.

O2 sensor tacked in, ready for weld.

Still glowing :-)

Close-up

Finished O2 weld.

Pipe weld (free hand MIG)

I did all of those free hand with a MIG welder. Not to blow my own horn or anything, but that pipe weld looks like a damn TIG weld, or at least a machine MIG weld. Admire the skillz :-P

This is from a photoshoot they did for a performance mag.

35th Anniversary Camaro SS, Ford GT, SVT Cobra, and a black Vette Z06 in the background behind all of them. The president and vice president owned all of those cars... rich ****ers.

And last but not least.

OM NOM NOM!
