5 gen running rich

Hi guys,

I'm the newbie here and was wondering if someone could shed some light a problem i've been having for quite some time now.

I have an 01' lude thats running rich it seems. I'm not sure why, as this car is completely stock except for a AEM cold air intake that was on teh car when I purchased it a year ago. In fear this was the cause of my problem I have since removed and replaced all factory gear myself, but am still seeing the same result. The car only has 80k on it, nothing ever replaced from what i know.

I notice when I hit Vtec smoke bails out of the exhaust for a sec, in the night time i can see the haze in the lights of cars behind me! I know these cars are famous for running rich but this is a bit much. No trouble to see the smoke in the daytime either. Also I find when slowly accelerating up a hill the car is somewhat hesitant when slowly climbing through RPM. There is also hesitation SOMETIMES during the VTEC rpm zone, both scenarios of hesitation seem worse when the engine temp isn't all the way up.

The most i've gotten out of a tank of fuel is about 400km (I believe the car has a 50 litre tank), bit much for a 4 cylinder car? It seems the car is off timing a tooth.. is this possible?

I did take my car to the honda dealer, they found the car was low on Oil and the dealer says VTEC is very sensitive to oil pressure. I believed him of course, I didn't check the oil b/c I only had the car a short period of time after purchasing it. As I say the hesitation is sporadic and the black smoking happens heavily sometimes but not always.

I've had a friend tell me yesterday when I left an area where he was standing that my car shot a cloud of black smoke, I lightly placed my foot on the gas as I was going down a hill.

Thoughtsss!??

My take, you are running rich because most likely your exhaust seal(s) is bad.
Black smoke is just that. Excessive clouds of smoke is bad for the vehicles behind you and mother Earth

Driving in vtec, oil pressure is sensitive. I've noticed Preludes with h22's tend to puff out smoke while changing gears...but if you are puffiing out clouds, then that points to the o-ring and ex seal(s).

400KM for a full tank of highway driving seems right though.

Good luck, let us know, hell of a first post and welcome to pz!

awesome.. thanks for the quick reply.

Now that I think of it... the stock exhaust doesn't sound whisper quite as it should, so I hope your right. Another symptom I havn't mentioned is bogging in low rpm... when I slow to make a 90 degree turn say, and i leave it in 2nd when I accelerate it seems to be alittle bogging or hestitation for about 2 or 3 secs. sounds like the same prob?

Theres definately clouds goin on... looks pretty dirty.

Thanks again.

id try changin o2 sensors, they make the engine run rich if they are going bad, or you can try to revive them by spraying carb cleaner on them to try and clean them, but i'd just change them.
