The right tire size!

Hey guys just picked up some nice 17" rims but i have a question on what size would have the best fit, so that i won't have to install suspension or lower the car to keep it stock but also fill in the wheel gap.... The tires i have on the rims are 225/40/17 and it looks to thin obviously....

Re: The right tire size!

if your car isn't lowered, you could fit some 45 series without rubbing, but if you're dropped as low as my car, you'd need some 40 series tires. Depends on what your rim offset is will determine a good size tire.

I think thats stock width, if not close to it, like biglegs said, offset is everything, otherwise you'll be a. rolling fenders or b. buying a new tire everytime you do 60 over a pebble.

Re: The right tire size!

I ran 17x8.5 +45 like biglegs with 205/45/17 and had no rubbing. I know people that run 17x9.75 +25 though.

I had 225/45/17 in the rear and 205/45/17 in the front and my rears rubbed. I'm running 45 series tires so you'll have thinner sidewalls and might not rub. I would say to be safe, run 215/40's. They don't stretch that much really on 17x8's. Like I said, I had 205's on 8.5 width. If I even plan on keeping my car my next set of shoes will be 17x9 +35 on my set of 205's now or 215's.

How low are you?

I have a set of 17x8.5 +40 and was thinking about running 225/45/R17 all the way around but after reading this I might step down to a 215/40 set up, anyone else have input on this?

I'm on Neuspeed Race with 2.5" front 2.0" rear. I could go lower and was planning to. My tires are tucked now though.

Re: The right tire size!

wow... Explains why the guy before me had 205's on the wheels. So you're saying 215/40 will be a good fit? Or should I just play it safe and stay with a 205/45?

Sorry for all the questions I just don't want to spend good money on tires and have them not function properly on the car.

You can fit 215/40 without an issue. It's the offset of your rims that might effect the outcome. In my opinion, a +40 would be fine. I could add a 10mm spacer to my rims when I had 17x8.5 cuz there was still a gap. Now because I'm dropped, I'm also cambered so that makes a difference as well.
