Check Engine Code 74, Looking for opinions

1999 Base Model Manual ~ 139K miles.

I was driving home from a family function Monday afternoon (3 Hour non-stop 70mph trip), when about half way the check engine light popped on. Nothing was associated with it, no shudder or sound. Engine rpm didn't fluctuate.

This check engine light was what brought me to this forum to begin with, I just didnt think it would be the first thing I seriously posted about.

First thing I did after a quick forum search was check my check engine code. Gave me a 74 in return. "Random Misfire Cylinder 4" . After a little more searching I ran across a couple posts regarding "Seafoaming the engine". Went ahead and did that last night (smoke show & all). After a short drive, stopped at autozone and picked up supplies for today. Tonight, first thing I did was change the oil and filter (Mobile 1 all round') ~ then the plugs and wires. The whole time I was working inside the head, I had the negative terminal disconnected from the battery.

Got everything put back together, still code 74. My next place to look I would think would be the distributor, I thought I would check here first. Also, After speaking with a friend, he said that the code might just need to be cleared from the ECU. I would think that having the negative terminal disconnected for the period of time I had, would have cleared any codes stored? Regardless, tomorrow he has a reader we are going to use to clear the codes too see if they come back.

Opinions/comments please. Lead me to water, I'll drink :)

Notes: Normal idle ~400(ish)rpm - No shudder or hesitation. Smooth acceleration. exhaust smells normal.

OK, we ran the code, it pulled a "P0141" - "o2 Heater Circuit, Bank 1 Sensor 2"

The only thing that confuses me is the word "Heater". If I replace Both the o2 sensors I should be good to go, right?

Our O2 sensors have heaters in them to bring them up to the correct temp with the engine.

You can replace them both, I think I got mine from sparkplugs.com for $75 a set

I appreciate the response. I didn’t know that our o2 sensors had heaters inside them. I’d also like to add… (For anyone else, If the number 2 sensor goes) the heat shield on the cat is a PAIN. Especially if two of the bolt heads round off as soon as you touch them due to rust. Sigh…

At least there it fixed the check engine light.

Rounded bolts suck butt!

Vice grips or that monkey bolt thing usually works though.

Glad to hear you have no more code, and you saved yourself probably a lot of money doing it yourself.
