Icon9 Whine coming from pulleys area.

Ok the day before it happened it was driving and sounding normal. Till a day later I started the engine I notice a loud whine coming from the engine bay.

I then took it to firestone and they said it could be the belts and I was like yeh they look like they need to be replace and plus the previous owner hasnt changed it since he first got it.

They replace the serpentine belt. We started it up and still the whine was there. But i continued to drive it and a couple hundred miles later the whine was hardly noticed yet still there.

Took it to my friends uncle's shop and he said if it isnt the belts then it must be like one of the two bearings or both that are located on or near the two big main pulleys.

My question is could this be correct, or is there another possibility to what it might be.

Re: Whine coming from pulleys area.

could be your power steering belt, or your alt belt.

If you replace them, they may still whine a little still. Just make sure they're not too tight.

i've got a slight whine from my alt belt, it's normal

could be a bearing going/gone bad on one of the pullys take your belt off and spin each one and listen for any weird noises or one that kinda feels like its grinding

Re: Whine coming from pulleys area.

Try this. Take off the P/S belt and start the car. If the whine is gone it's most likely the bearings on the P/S pump. Over here it is common on third gens.

Re: Whine coming from pulleys area.

hey im having a similar problem in my 99 base. the weird thing is that the spedo stops working under load then when I let off the gas It comes back on. the whine is on the driver side and starts at about 20mph gets louder with rpm, when clutch is engaged noise stops. replace timing belt and installed a manual tensioner and problem still exist. any ideas would be great.

Re: Whine coming from pulleys area.

Possibly the balance shaft tensioner bearing or timing belt tensioner bearing.

Or water pump

that happened when I replaced the timing belt too and that fixed it when I changed all the motor mounts. that cost me $300 more because I bought an oem.

Re: Whine coming from pulleys area.

ill have to check the balance shaft but it comes at about 3000 rpms and only when in gear. the battery wouldn't hold a charge so I thought it was the alternator but I swapped that and the battery and it still wont charge.... the spedo was working fine with fresh battery tho
