Icon5 Random Stalling. HELP!!!!!

Hey Guys,

Okay to start off I have a 1999 Honda Prelude Base 5spd, with a couple bolt on parts such as a k&n CAI a Flowmaster muffler, and other stuff that is not related to horsepower. Recently I have been having trouble with my car stalling it mostly happens at stop signs/lights or when making a turn when your holding in the clutch. Recently I had cleaned the EGR valve but did not replace the ports. Which this stopped the problem for a short period and this problem is intermittent. If any one knows of anything or needs more info please post your input.

Thanks

Re: Random Stalling. HELP!!!!!

Does it turn right back on after it cuts off? Have you cleaned your throttle body recently? When was the last time you did a tune up? Maybe it's your fuel pump. There's many things that can cause your car to cut off.

Re: Random Stalling. HELP!!!!!

Could be a result of your bad compression. Change your head gasket.

Re: Random Stalling. HELP!!!!!

low compression. find out what it is because its going to get to the point where your car will stall and not start again for a while. i dont think you want that to happen in traffic driving somewhere

Re: Random Stalling. HELP!!!!!

That is pretty bad, and by pretty bad I mean really bad, the probability is that it is your piston rings that went but you can have a shop do a leak down test for you and you will find out where you are losing your compression, could just be you need a valve adjustment though...

The idle adjustment screw is right here took me literally 10 seconds to find this picture of it... Newbies need to search lol

Yeah man that is just going to be a temporary fix man, get a leak down test and figure out where you are losing your compression.

Re: Random Stalling. HELP!!!!!

hmm have you tried looking at the plunger screw in the fast idle thermo valve? I'm only suggesting that because it sucked in too much air causing my car to run rich. How loud does your car idle? Look there since it is a free fix, it's the valve right under the TB and there is a great write on here. You seem to have car symptoms that would be caused by a vacuum leak. My car used to stall when i had the clutch pressed in, not giving gas but turning the wheel. That was until i screwed in the FITV. I'm not saying that would solve your problem but it's not hard to do.

Re: Random Stalling. HELP!!!!!

i did read the thread, just made the FITV suggestion since he mentioned that all he did was adjust the idle screw to fix his problem. either way if it is bad compression, the idle screw or fitv isn't his true problems.

Re: Random Stalling. HELP!!!!!

Just some personal experience here.

Ive had the ignition switch recall done already on my 5th gen (there is a free recall on 97s), and lately car stalls while driving, at idle or in gear. Took it back to honda after replacing everything (fuel relay, wires, plugs, rotor, cleaned egr, etc. They tested "new" ignition switch and found it to be faulty as well.

So new ignition switch, hasnt stalled at all since. Boys. Take your ludes to honda immediately if you have not had the ignition switch recall done, and in my case even if you have had it done. its free and will save you hassle. And keep your lude happy, ignition system flips out when the switch is bad, car can go "limp" real quick like that.

And also saw on service screen, there is also a ball joint recall on the 5th gens, at least 97s.
