Icon1 Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

I have found a couple of DIY on other transmission but would rather have one with the M2Y4 or M2U4 with good amount of pictures unlike the helms/service manual...

example of one I liked:

I might try and slap one together...

Looks like my reverse might have to get replaced and a gear next to it, about 4 teeth are chipped.

Is there a definite way to determine if the synchros are the carbon kind? Mine are goldish like the ones I've seen on synchrotech.

Yes, this is my first time opening a transmission, every little thing caught my eye. I have highlighted troubled areas in the attached photos.

Shouldn't the magnet have a piece in each half? Mine only has a mag on one side and the other is empty, and there was sooo much gunk on it!

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

Magnet is only supposed to be on one side, found that answer out by looking up the part.

What about the gear being chipped, should I replace it?

Does it look like I have the carbon synchros?

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

David over at synchrotech, "A carbon synchro still has a brass body but with a carbon lining on the inside."

So, I am going to go out on a limb and say these probably aren't lined with the carbon; based on this thing being used and sold to me so cheap.

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

Pulled the "towers" out..this is not really that hard. Prep'd the cases for paint, thinking of going the standard gray..maybe blue to match my paint..idk yet.

Will be ordering bearing, seal, and carbon synchro kit from synchrotech this week (kit#BSK-SYN109).

Also, I have to order/buy a press so I can push these gears off the shaft, unless someone near me wont mind me using theirs???? HMMM friends....

Pictures are from a donor sh transmission, I will be taking the gears and putting them into the m2y4, one of my sychro sleeves is damaged and so is the reverse idler.

Upon opening the m2u4 i couldn't believe how clean and fresh smelling it was. The m2y4 smelled like shyt and the oil was black! This one was sweet smelling and a tint of amber. Some people just don't care about their cars...

Picture of the case is from the m2y4...looking all dirty and nasty...took me an hr to clean it and that was just the inside.

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

I forgot to put the mount/seal bracket in the box today. If you need it let me know.

I did leave all of the clips on the cables though. Almost sent the shifter with them due to my being lazy and not wanting to pull the cables. Sad, right? haha

Its ok to be lazy you are mostly working all night while the rest of us are snoozing away..

The bracket I have is attached, was there another I should be looking for? What seal are you referring to?

The plate that bolts onto the car under the exhaust heat shield. Clamps on top of the rubber gasket.

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

OH, I probably need it if the auto doesn't have one. I'll look around on line and see if the parts match.

Is it #6 in the picture? If so, I DO need it...

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

That's the one. Well, it could be. On the part details is it listed as a plate or a gasket? The rubber is on the cables. Clips for shifter side are on them as well. The guy that took them off the tranny slaughtered them.

Sorry for my lack of research. iPhone hates honda's parts site. Let me know.

Says #6 is the wire change. So it must be attached to the wires and I guess shouldn't be removable..

Waiting for payday to order bearings, seals, and carbon sychros

Pictures of new press and half painted case.

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

Placed my order with Synchrotech - Honda & Acura Transmissions

Ordered seals, bearings, synch spring, and 1-5 carbon lined synchos. They hooked it up with a kicka$$ deal! Defiantly will continue doing business with them.

A few parts came today. Shifter bracket for one.

Still can't put the trans together so I painted the other half and clear coated the clutch housing which I finished yesterday. Think 10 coats of paint and 5 coats of clear will keep it looking clean and shinny?

Pictures of minor work done today.

Still waiting for new sychros, seals, bearings, and parts from majestic honda before I can put this back together.

Just relaized I forgot to get hondabond...

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

Received the carbon synchros today. All the need seals were there, boot, bearings, snap ring too.

They look amazing don't they!

I have to wait for some parts from majestic before I can slap this project together and get my swap done.

I am going with Honda MTF. GM Mesh Friction modified was $14 a bottle at my local gm and that's with my discount!

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

noice! I might upgrade my synchro's to carbon, I've been looking at them for quite a while.

don't use GM fluid in you honda trans................ It's not just about brand loyalty, the parts are engineered to work with a specific fluid. The shop that rebuilt the trans for my ford van used mopar fluid, the trans crapped out at 20,000 miles.

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

David over at Synchrotech - Honda & Acura Transmissions

Suggested Honda MTF for DD and Torco MTF for high performance.

Anyone want to share their thoughts on Torco MTF?

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

Seals and bearing installed.

Had to clean trans housing and panint. SH was 1/2" too short on the inside and wouldn't sit correctly

Off topic.

Installed clutch & brake pedal today. Was a pain in the ass!

Parts come tomorrow to finish up the trans and then it will be dropped in this weekend.

Re: Need DIY for M2Y4 Trans Rebuild

So I had a horrible sinus infection all last week.

Finished the trans up. Had to buy a new sychro sleeve for 5th gear, old one wouldn't glide over the new ring on the carbon sychro.

Pictures of finished project. Going to work on getting a guide put together for the m2y4 trans for everyone..If you have pictures I could use them I didn't take as many as I wanted.

PS: Couldn't find liquid tape stuff so I used electrical tape on my reverse switch
