Trunk wouldn't stay open

Everytime I open the trunk, it seems very weak and when a light wind hits it, it just slams back down. Is there anyway to strengthen the trunk so it would hold up better?

Re: Trunk wouldn't stay open

Carbon fiber trunk
Structs

You have anything on your trunk? I dynamatted my trunk piece and it's a bit heavier and drops easier then it did before. Still holds up though.

Re: Trunk wouldn't stay open

It sounds to me like those torsion bars have fallen off. As they're a pain in the posterior to replace if you don't have the appropriate tools.

There is a write up on here somewhere (I'll give you a hint - I wrote it so start looking in the DIY vault for stuff I posted) on how to retrofit a set of hydraulic struts to the trunk lid.

Re: Trunk wouldn't stay open

yep, most likely the torsion bars. alotta people remove them if you get aftermarket speakers in your trunk lid. the magnet is too big and they hit the bars. i removed mine, without the proper tools which eneded up bad, i dont reccomend it. there was blood. if they are out though, your trunk WONT stay up at all, and its gonna be heavy. one might have slipped out of its bracket?? i really dont see those thing going bad. they are pretty tough.

Re: Trunk wouldn't stay open

If you added a spoiler on than you don't have the proper tension bars for the trunk.

But at the same time if you have no spoiler than you can install the stronger tension bars and they will hold the trunk up better.

Having a carbon fiber trunk won't help at all - you cannot use the tension bars at all or they will fling the trunk up too quickly and most likely cause it to crack.
I have a cf trunk, and I can only use one tension bar reversed (gives me enough spring to pull the trunk with the trunk release but not enough to hold it up)

You could also do the trunk damper mod.

Re: Trunk wouldn't stay open

Is the trunk supposed to lift it self when you pop it open?

Mine just lifts a little and I have to lift it...

Re: Trunk wouldn't stay open

you have to lift it physically unless you put a hydraulic strut on it like Brash said.

The torsion bars for spoiler fitted cars are the same as the non-spoiler fitted cars. There are multiple mounting points for them to sit; when the dealer fitted the spoiler they simply moved the bar from position 1 to position 2.

then why is the left spring a different model number for the SH and base?
