Buying a used Prelude: What to look for?

Hey guys,

So I'm seriously considering buying a new Prelude. I'm looking for one under 150k miles and minimal rust.

Other than the obvious exterior body damage, what should I and can I check while seeing the car? I know most Preludes burn oil, some more than others, but I guess I wouldn't be able to tell until I drive it for a month and check the levels.

What are the other important things to look out for?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Buy a 5 speed no matter how new the transmission is or how long the guys going to warranty the transmission for. Our automatic transmissions are known to fail, although you do get the lucky few.

well if your considering a higher mileage prelude like that you need to be positive the timing belt and water pump has been replaced. just do a general check on whats been done to the motor maintenance wise. check the oil. and there is a way to check for excessive oil burnoff, if you hit VTEC an theres a black-ish color from the exhaust then that should be a huge stop sign and try to find another car. just my .02

Agreed.

Pull the carpet up in the trunk and check under the spare. Known rust spots that can get bad. Ask if the EGR & ports have been cleaned. Park on a steep angle and rest the car on the e-brake.

It really is the small things.

Re: Buying a used Prelude: What to look for?

If the owner lets you, check out the suspension. If it's been dropped checked for fatigued joints, bushings, tie rods, end-links, the Arms, If that stuff goes, Tragedy. Always check your fluids. If they are the right levels and clean. Turn the steering wheel to hear if the pump is working or chattering, moaning or whining, hoses not cracked around the hose clamps, aka the basic inspection you're supposed to take before each drive. Deduct from the car's cost if: no a/c, bald tires, incabin electronics not 100% (dash/radio lights, no power locks, windows, cigarette lighter busted, sunroof, gauges, etc, etc), no spare or missing tools, RATTLING. AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: Look for tangled wiring, or loose wires, because people put in and take out after market crap from their cars and hope you don't catch them. One electrical issue and it'll never end.

Re: Buying a used Prelude: What to look for?

rust through spots are terrible and are extremely hard to deal with. if there is no rust on it its alot better. make sure there are no grinds in the tranny. Start it and let it sit for about fifteen minutes to make sure the fan turns on and everything else is still in working order.

Hey! Some of us like to troll our own posts to validate our existence. Stop C@ck Blocking! Lmao! I might just sacrifice my 1980 AAA car maintenance manual so it can be stickied. At least a cool bedtime story right?

Re: Buying a used Prelude: What to look for?

check the how clean the engine is! you will really notice how a person maintains his car just by looking at the engine lol! check interior, lights, "labels" to see if all parts are original, check for leeks, door handels,, suspencion, ride quality, if the a/c is working perfectly!.... if the check engine is on....
