Yay! New Looking Headlights!

So a few days ago I decided my headlights looked like Justin Bieber's hair-do... Horrible

So on Wednesday at the shop I taped off my headlights and sanded them, and sanded them, and sanded.... etc. Then it started to sprinkle

Today it finally cleared up and I re-sanded them and prep'd them for some special UV protection coating stuff we have. Taped em off, and shot em. I'd say they look pretty dang good.

I don't actually have any pics of what it looked like before. But you can imagine.

They look good, man. I've been meaning to do my headlights for like a year. One day I'll get around to them. Lol

Re: Yay! New Looking Headlights!

Thanks you! It really didn't take me long at all, I probably took a total of an hour on it today, and maybe 30 minutes on Wednesday, but I re-did everything today. So really about an hour. BUT I also let it sit outside to cure in the sunlight so it would be dry and drivable by the time I got off.

Re: Yay! New Looking Headlights!

Really and truly all I did was wet sand the headlights with 400. When you wet sand it, there's this yellow film stuff that you can see coming off, and as you continue to sand it turns white. When it finally turns white I dried it off, then wet sanded them again with 1000 and then 2000. After that cleaned them off with some stuff that smelt like Isopropyl. Sprayed em. Spraying them is the hardest but quickest part. Only hard if you don't know how to paint with an automotive paint gun.

Re: Yay! New Looking Headlights!

I just bought the Turtle Wax Headlight Restoration Kit from Autozone for 8 bucks. Took me 10 minutes total. There were several steps to get your headlights clear, but the first step got mine clear enough, so I just skipped the heavy duty stuff and used the provided sealing wipes. The after pictures don't do it justice. I don't know how long they'll last, but for 8 bucks, I'm happy with the results.

Re: Yay! New Looking Headlights!

Oh man, I love that color!

I'm not sure about how long it'll last, I've never used it. I've had one of two friends use it on their cars and they lasted as long as they had the cars lol - Usually sold them pretty quick. I sanded a friends headlight not to long ago and used to Meguire's (SP) Plastix (I think) and buffed the hell out of it. Still looks good. I think all in all it depends on the type of plastic and how deep it is, and how much effort you put into them. I think yours look good. Mine are almost too clear

Re: Yay! New Looking Headlights!

My next project is installing my fogs (hopefully this weekend) and then paint the whole car (Keeping the original color) here hopefully within the next few weeks. I want to get it done before I start back to college in the fall.

How do they look now, I spent like a half hour on mine and they looked a lot better but now it seems like they went back to how they were, and what is the special UV protection stuff you had?

Not that it matters since I can't drive it now lol

Wouldn't it be easier to take the headlights out and doing it rather then taping up the surrounds?

it's much more difficult to buff a headlight when it's not attached to anything. I would keep the hood up to keep the tapping to a minimum.

Exactly, It is much more difficult to deal with the headlight when not attached to the car. Plus it's quicker, and I needed to be able to put the headlights in the sun to help cure.

Well, they still look really good actually. My cars just really dirty lol, I'll give her a wash this weekend, since this will be the first freetime I've had in a while! Then I'll post pics, and I should have my fogs installed too

In order to get them looking clear, you'd need to wetsand the headlights with a fine grit like 400 until the yellow color is completely gone. After that sand with 1000, 2000, and if you want, 3000. But all of this will only remove the yellow and prep for clear. If you just sand the headlights, they will just turn cloudy. I had a friend that also wet sanded his, but instead used Meguires (sp) Plastix with the buffer attachment for his drill and buffed the hell out of them. They looked good, and actually still do. I think it's been a month.
