What should I do?

Hey guys, I own a red 97 lude with an automatic transmission that I've had for almost 2 years. It's a great car but after reading all of the crap there is about how terrible the automatic is, I've been thinking about getting either a 5 speed swap or just selling it and getting a 4th gen (I really want one). My parents and I spent about 5k on it and it was kept in really good condition. I've done nothing but baby it but sadly, the transmission finally gave up at about 130k miles. We got it rebuilt if I remember correctly along with a list of several upgrades/replacements. The car has been making some weird noises lately and I'm worried that it's my transmission again. It's only been about 8k miles later so I'm wondering what the problem is. I don't drive it harshly nor have I ever neutral dropped it so I really hope it's not the transmission. So what should I do? Should I try to sell it and get a 4th gen? Or do you guys have any ideas for me?

Re: What should I do?

well, think about it. with the issues you're having, do you think you can sell it as is? probably not. is it really worth it to sell it and buy an older car with more mileage... you'll probably get less for your prelude then you'd spend on a nice 4th gen.

as for a swap, you could get all the parts for about a grand. maybe 1300 if you're not so lucky. i managed to get all the parts (cept for the gauges/ecu which aren't really required) for 300. i got lucky though, my friend who drove a 4th gen with the vtec motor and tranny, wrecked his car. me and a buddy gave him 300 each to part it out for him. i took the tranny, he took the engine and everything else. so if you're lucky, you can have everything for as cheep as 300 or 500 or even 800... now the part to worry about is labor. i can't seem to recall what the going rate for that is right now. unless you intend to do it yourself. it's not that hard. but it does take some mechanical know how. a bit time consuming.. if all you're used to is spark plugs and oil changes, then i wouldn't do it. but if you've delved into much bigger things, and you can follow instructions well, it's worth a try.

to me selling your 5th (if you even can) and buying a 4th has to many unknowns. me being as frugal and as i am, i wouldn't risk it. if that is something you're willing to risk then go for it. for me, a 5spd swap has way fewer unknowns. you could get a bad tranny. but it's also very easy to crack open a tranny and rebuild it before you slap it in... and it's not very expensive compared to the whole swap...

Re: What should I do?

I'm not car or engine/mechanically smart at all. And if I were to sell my lude, I'd definitely have to have some cash along side that to ensure I bought a nice 4th gen. But it's just an idea. I'm just worried that if I rebuild this transmission again, it's going to fail again in the same if not shorter period of time. How much do you think I could get out of my car, having the transmission issue? Then again, it's the same problem that pretty much every other auto 5th gen has :/

Re: What should I do?

well if i had to guess by your first post, you're around 138k? probably about 3g, give or take. depends on what the actual problem is... what sort of noise is it making? when do the noises occur? it could be something simple like your drive shafts or bearing. i haven't heard a lot of the auto preludes making noises before they fail. most of the time it just slips or just doesn't go into gear at all.

Re: What should I do?

I'll record a video of the noise on my phone when I get out on the road. But if my memory is correct, it makes a "errrrrnnnn" noise at the beginning and the end of each gear if you know what I mean. Like it makes the noise right before 2nd gear, then at the beginning of 2nd gear, before 3rd, and so on. Now, when I use the sports shifter and run the car quickly (punch it), it doesn't make the noise at all.

Re: What should I do?

Sorry for the double post but here's the links of the noises:
Weird noise #1:
Weird noise #2:
It doesn't do it when I punch it though:
And here's the weird shakey thing. It always does it 2-3 times then stops. You may not be able to hear it but you can see the camera shake. Is this normal?:

Re: What should I do?

that is pretty strange. but when you're just revving it it does it also. hard to say for sure it is the tranny. sounds like it's at a specific RPM. which tells me it's something loose or rattling. like an exhaust bracket/hanger.

as for the shanke, did you see your idle drop way low? that's why it shook. that could be caused by a number of things. one of them NOT being the tranny.. but usually tune up stuff will help it. there was something you can clean. i can't remember what it i was though, but it helped when i had that issue.

Re: What should I do?

I don't think the noise would be from my exhaust because I'm like 99.9999% positive that it's coming from the front of my car rather than the back. I'm going to have a family friend who works on cars check it out as well as the shaking. If we can figure out what the problem is, do you think I could possibly get 4k out of the car?

Re: What should I do?

you do know, your exhausts spans nearly the whole length of the car right? if your heat shield on your exhaust manifold is loose it could make that sound. i'm not saying THAT IS WHAT YOUR PROBLEM IS. but it's something to check so when you take it in and they say, oh look it's your heat shield is kinda loose. and now you look like an idiot.

i had a very similar sound that only occurred during hard acceleration and on right hand turns. i must have ran over something because my heat shield under the car was bent and contacting the exhaust pipe. i bent it back and now it's ever so rare.. i also took the heat shield off in the engine bay to paint it one time. i reinstalled it. one of the bolts (the hard to reach one down below) i must have not tightened all the way because it came loose and the heat shield was rattling.

Use the Lebron technique:

Re: What should I do?

I see three problems.

1. You are driving an auto-tragic
2. You CEL is on
3. You maintenance indicator is in yellow

Have you done a timing job on your lude? Mine started to make weird noises kind of like yours until I did the timing. Might want to also check valve clearance while you have the cover off.

Re: What should I do?

My CEL is constantly turning on and off. But yeah, I see the maintenance thing and sadly, when I was looking at the prelude I bought, I had no idea that the automatic ludes were such garbage :/

Re: What should I do?

If it's flashing then its some thing major and could damage engine/cat

You should get the code pulled. Dont feel bad, i needed a car bad and had to buy a sissy-auto so I'm in the same boat, working on my 5spd swap.

Re: What should I do?

I'm just hoping I can try to sell it and get a nice manual 4th gen :/ Unfortunately, that may not be the best option for the money.
