Wrecked 1997 Prelude SH

Hello, folks. I figured I'd post my story here, I need to vent.
So, a week ago today I went and bought a 1997 Prelude SH. 160,000 miles, but in nearly perfect condition. Cost me $5200. Here's a picture of the car on the day I bought it.

Anyways. I brought the car home, a 40 minute highway drive. I loved it. Compared to the SC2 I was driving before, this Prelude was a dream.

Thank you, V-TEC.

One last picture, the car sitting in my (cluttered) garage.

The next day I spent learning the 5 speed, this being my first manual transmission. I drove all damn day, unaware of the events to come.
Around 8:30 PM, I was on my way back home from a local park. While I was waiting to turn onto my main road, a drunk driver in a Ford F-150 rear ended me at a speed of 65 miles per hour. He pushed me 130 feet down the road, and continued speeding away from the scene until he himself wrecked his truck off of a barrier. This is the car post-accident.

As you can see, entirely destroyed. Upon impact I was knocked unconscious. I woke up two days later in the hospital, and was released the next afternoon. Sorry for the long story, just figured I would explain and share my story. I'll forever miss this car, and I'm most likely going to head for another Prelude after the settlement.
Dunno if I have a message behind this, but be careful out there, fellow luders.

Yeah, I had just insured the car that morning.

The airbags didn't deploy, I believe this is because I didn't sustain any front end damage. A good friend of mine is hoping to swap out the motor into his 1997 Civic Ex. Not even sure if that's possible, anyone know anything about it?

I figured, just wasn't really sure what supplies we would need to have swap performed. It's already a 5spd Ex, so I figured tranny, motor mount, not sure what else. I'm also trying to figure out how to work it out with insurance to actually get access to the car. life. /sigh

I don't think you can, my Dad had a Crossfire and after Katrina when we came back, the car had flooded but no more than wet interior and some mildew and rusted rotors and whatnot and they wouldn't let him buy it back and fix the interior, now they don't make the car anymore and its worth somewhere close to 50gs. So good luck with that, and I know for a fact that you'll have to check the gear ratio for his tranny and whatnot because otherwise when he shifts, he'll pop out of VTEC and lose massive amounts of torque, a few trannies from Honda are compatible, but you just have to check the gearing to stay within power band.

Holy f***! If someone hit my lude like that... there would be murders.

You are one lucky guy. We are all glad to see you walk away from this one. From one Luder to another; you will get another car. They can easily be replaced.

Drivetrain is rough with those swaps. The axle angles are garbage so he will need to invest in axles made for that swap. They are out there...

OMG! Double post! I figured someone else would have posted by the time I did. My bad :(

I have a feeling the whole process is going to be much more trouble than it's worth.

Trust me, it's just now sinking in how raging pissed I am that I only owned that car for 1 day. I looked so long for a clean Prelude in the KCK area, and then this happens. But I suppose I am lucky I even walked away.

Well I have a pretty sever concussion, bruised ribs from the steering wheel (yes, I was wearing a seatbelt, they literally ripped) but other than that I'm right as rain. Just dealing with minor headaches! But the hunt for another Prelude is on. The dealer I bought the first one from has a 2000 SH he is rebuilding, should be ready in a month or two

Dude, if you are anywhere near Joplin or St Louis, I will buy you lunch. Your bad (and good) luck earned it. I'm going to drive my lude down there when the v6 swap is done and see my family.

Wow, I cringed when I saw those pics... at least you're ok.

I always keep an eye on my rearview mirror when I'm waiting to turn just in case. Saved me a few times from idiots who weren't gonna have enough room to stop before plowing into me.

Re: Wrecked 1997 Prelude SH

This reminds me of what could have happened to me aswell it's a trip. I was on the road at night with my friend on a 50 mph road when I see this truck in my rear view mirror heading at me and getting close fast I was about to change lanes to do a U-turn at a light and he slightly turn towards me and almost it me I was in shock for atleast an hour If I hadn't jercked my car away and turned fast enough he would have hit me. I can't imagine how you felt before and after.

Re: Wrecked 1997 Prelude SH

Kudo's to Honda for designing such a vehicle that it absorbed that incredible impact before it crushed you too. It could have been MUCH worse. Watch that headache tho... it could be a sign of a pinched nerve in your neck. do NOT sign off on any insurance without having a clause to cover your medical. get an Attorney now!

normally I don't believe in taking advantage of anyone... but F*%# that drunk driver. Take his driving career off the road. Forever. Fuggin assholes. I don't care if someone drinks but stay out of the damn car when you are.
