Won't go into reverse

I have an '01 Lude sh, and for a while now, my car won't shift into reverse. I've had no problems with 1-5, just wondering if anyone knows what might be going on, I've heard that they sometimes have this problem and it's an easy fix. Please help, thanks :)

Re: Won't go into reverse

Try putting it in first then reverse. If that works then thats a normal occurence with many Honda transmissions. Likewise with going into first.. sometimes it sticks.

See this thread:
sometimes the gear shifter won't go into first

Re: Won't go into reverse

This doesn't really help but.... My car did the same thing a few years ago.. It was annoying as hell. Always had to park where I could just pull out or on a hill so I just run back down. This guy at my old work with an rx-7 had the same problem.

It just fixed itself one day and I haven't had it happen since. It was probably a bad syncro or fork

I would open up the transmission if you're mechanically inclined.. I'm not sure how much a shop would charge to open it up but I do know Honda wanted to charge me like a grand just to LOOK at it! I told them I could get a gently used jdm transmission with l.s.d. For cheaper than that.

Thanks, I was told by a guy I talked to today that his buddy had the same problem and had some sort of trick to get it going again, but couldn't remember what it was(real helpful, lol) any who, I'll dink with it when the weather is nice as I don't have a shop and I'll let everyone know how it turns out. Thanks

Re: Won't go into reverse

Yeah I hate that. Both of my previous Honda's had such a problem going into reverse. But like zpirbhai said I just put it in first and then right into reverse and that usually does the trick.

Re: Won't go into reverse

Same thing here. I put it into 1st and then neutral and then reverse and then it works and then even sometimes I cant go into 1st gear. Changing my tranny oil from 10w-30 to Honda MTF helped abit.

Re: Won't go into reverse

Sounds like your syncro.

You should check your shifter cables first to play it safe. If you don't have the money to dump on a new tranny or carbon syncros - try flushing it and putting in some Amsoil syncromesh or regular transmission fluid.

Re: Won't go into reverse

That happened to me a while back.. I couldn't go into reverse at all for like a month and had to push it when backing out lmao.
You can try pumping the clutch like a lot of times. I did that and it went into reverse, it was a bit rough but it went in. It should be like a temporary fix until you get it sorted, it should be your syncro, that's what was wrong with mine

Re: Won't go into reverse

Before you do anything, know this.

When you go from 1st to reverse (yes, you should be in first before you go into reverse, also, the car should be COMPLETELY stopped) it is normal for it to take 5-10 seconds before you can shift into reverse. This is called spindown time.

So if you're going from first then to reverse, wait 5-10 seconds then try to shift into reverse. If it goes in, its fine. If you still get gear clashing (grinding) after 5-10 seconds, you have a problem.

If it ISN"T grinding, then it probably isn't the synchronizer, but there are other issues it could be, such as certain hydraulic and clutch problems.
