muffler suggestions

So i had purchased my lude with a full 2.5 inch DC sports catback exhaust and i have been debating for some time now if i should get rid of it. I wont say its completely ricer because it does have a nice deep hum on the low end but its just to F***ing loud after 3k rpms. Like im screaming i have a 4 cylinder engine! Does anyone have any suggestions of something that would still sound good but not loud enough for every cop in the city to know where i am when i go WOT?

Re: muffler suggestions

my 3 options i would choose in order from first choice to last are these:
1. Greddy Spectrum Elite, non-N1 style exhaust, great quality and last long without rusting, deep tone, little raspy if cat-converter is old.
2. Tanabe Medalion Touring, again non-N1 style exhaust, great deep tone, low rumble
3. Apex'i world sport exhaust, again non-n1 style exhaust, that sounds pretty much stock or a tad bit louder. The piping will rust if you are in snowy areas since the piping is mild steel rather than stainless.

As you can see i dont like N1 exhaust due to the fact that they sound good but over time will become farty.

I've had a greddy exhaust go thru 3 winters with no rusting on the piping or canister itself.

Re: muffler suggestions

What would qualify as a N1 exhaust?

I can attest to the Megan Racing full catback isn't too loud with cat installed (Cali laws), has very good rumple & pop on decel, and hums quiet on freeway. Doesn't have any of that rattly, raspy obnoxious sound either. Will resonate under WOT but just don't do that right outside your house or in parking lots and city streets like a ricer kid and you're fine. Most cops nowadays will pull you over for going Vin Diesel much faster than just having an exhaust. Drive like a normal person and they will leave you alone. Save the ricing for the track or the middle of nowhere, where you can kill yourself and car in peace, like I do :)

Re: muffler suggestions

Go with a twin loop. If I could go back, I would have stopped talking about it and actually purchased one. Twin loops are great, just watch the ebay ones. And they hang low due to the design, so be careful if you're lowered. Other than that, I'd look for a silencer, or find a muffler that has on included.

**edit
My set up was great though, I had an N1 muffler with silencer, and an 18" resonator. N1's are loud, but with the right set up they can be great. Add a resonator to any exhaust and you'll start losing the raspiness, and get back more of a grumble.

thanks guys the feedback is great. i will definitely look into the twin loop setup. And gchampaninh that list you gave me is great. I actually got pulled over on my local strip within a month of getting my car (i was not even racing or being loud) and the cop slapped me with an illegal exhaust because "technically" anything after market exhaust in Wisconsin is illegal. Its BS but i weaseled my way out of it. Long story. But i should have just replaced it there and then. Repped

Re: muffler suggestions

FLOWMASTER or MAGNAFLOW...IMO, they sound the best, and are not too loud, but definitely noticeable. they have a nice low rumble in the low rpms, and the only time it gets any sort of loud is when Im in fourth gear going up the mountain(at which time I usually shift down to third to help Crystal up the mountain, especially on the way to school)...and they are just about the only ones to me that don't sound like a fart can(well, I take that back. if you can find one, the Mugen Twin loop is awesome...couple of my buddies have em and Im jealous as heck. But the real ones are hard as heck to find). And concerning that Cop, him and that rule, Im going to have to raise the

Youtube the exhaust you have in mind just to get an idea as to what it's going to sound like. The ones i mentioned are large but only the tip is noticable. as for low sound with some performance gains, the Apex'i World Sports is right on the money.

thanks gchampaninh. I have gained some valuable info over the past two days and ill keep you guys informed on what im goin to do. One last question though. I have 2.5 inch pipes and lets say i really like a muffler with 2.25 inch. I am aware that this is hardly a decrease in size but i dont necisarily like the fact that i would be "downgrading." in your opinion would u keep looking. And for Havikprelude im just messin around. ik its huge. im still in the process of cleaning my new sig up.

Re: muffler suggestions

I think you should return your exhaust to its stock configuration because the best sounds that come out of a VTEC engine comes from the intake and you don't want to dilute the great intake sound with the common, uninspiring sounds that comes out its exhaust .This great intake sound comes from the high rpm valve overlap on a VTEC engine, causing the intake valve in addition to the exhaust valve to be open during part of the exhaust stroke, resulting in typical off road race car like sounds coming from the intake above about 5k rpms in addition to the typical on the street type sounds that come from the exhaust .Below 5k rpms, the valve overlap is less and the noise level at the intake is subdued. Around town you just keep the rpms on the low rpm, small valve over lap cam and the car remains quite. When you are in need of a engine noise fix, you just bring the engine up above 5k and you get the best sounding 4cyl engine around with the exception of the S2000 engine in my opinion. You can bring up the noise level on the intake if you want by simply disabling the ""muffler"" on the intake by plugging tube at the very bottom of the air filter box that leads to the resonator box inside the fender under the air filter box.

The picture shown below shows the part of the intake thats in the front fender. The resonator/muffler part is at the very bottom :

Lastly the 5th gen Prelude exhaust after 5 refinement cycles is at the point that any aftermarket modification, unless done in conjunction with other significant mods that require a different type of exhaust ,will not create any gains that are really worth the effort and expense.

Re: muffler suggestions

Im sorry SHDriver but i already have too much invested into my car to bring it back to bone stock. The airbox idea sounds great but i already have a cold air intake. which in my opinion also sounds orgasmic when v-tech initiates. As for the exhaust i can understand what you mean but i honestly dont have the money to pay for a completely new exhaust system. Does anyone else see that the newer post are being randomly thrown into the middle of older posts. How odd.

Dude...its not even worth worrying about. 2.5 to 2.25? Not enough to keep looking. Now say if you were really in the market for a 3 inch(which i personally am quite against, but anyway), and you found a 2.25, then yea I would definitely keep looking. But 2.25 to 2.5 isn't really that big of a difference.
