Grind into 3rd? help please!

so the past couple days when i'm accelerating, it shifts fine until I go to shift into third. clutch is all the way in and i shift into 3rd and its like it grinds a bit going into the gear. how is this possible? it then shifts just fine into 4th and 5th. i'm not releasing the clutch to early, and it doesn't happen everytime either. it seems to happen more when i'm accelerating harder. if i'm accelerating slowly and shift slowly it doesn't do it. any ideas?

Re: Grind into 3rd? help please!

throw out bearing.

clutch might be going.

tranny could be getting old.

when was the last time you changed the mtf?

notice any slipping?

Re: Grind into 3rd? help please!

i'm sorry, what does mtf stand for? i did just have the tranny serviced.
and i'm assuming it would just because the engine is cold, but sometimes when i let out the clutch it doesn't take it right away. is that possible slipping? the car does have about 149k miles on it. i do want to upgrade the clutch and flywheel though possibly this summer.

Re: Grind into 3rd? help please!

This happened to me as well about a year ago. Filled her up with redline lightweight shockproof tranny fluid that i bought from kingmotorsports and no more grinding. I am aware that this is only a bandage on the fact that my syncro is shot. But what the hell. If 20 dollars fixed it now with no signs problems for over a year now. Why not right?

Re: Grind into 3rd? help please!

Try Syncro-mesh MTF. Apparently it's great and I've heard people have little to no 3rd gear grind when using it. I'm going to switch over to that soon.

to be accurate its called gm syncromesh, if you can find it get the friction modified version.
the place to find it would be a gm dealer

Re: Grind into 3rd? help please!

In the meantime, try double clutching into third.

Re: Grind into 3rd? help please!

Double clutching only works becuase it allows you to lower your rpms between shifts. I was only grinding when shifting into third over 5k rpms so this didnt pertain to me. If this is the same scenerio for you i would just suggest shifting around 2-3k until you get the mtf. Good luck

...............uuuummmmm no . this statement is completely false. the purpose of double clutching is to match the rpms in the tranny to the speed of the engine, making the syncros do less work. by your logic just taking a long time to shift does the same thing as double clutching. lower shift rpms mare easier for the syncros to handle, less stress and fewer rpms to match to. so i understand where you're coming from, but double clutching does entirely different things. by double clutching you do the job of the syncro

spreading false information is a no no.

Re: Grind into 3rd? help please!

That is what i meant when i said it lowers the rpms. So how am i wrong if u basically elaborated on what i already stated. So lets not say im completely false when you agree with what im saying. The only difference is that with shifting into neutral first it lowers the load on the tranny and allows the rpms to drop quickly. the reason why it does the job of the syncro is becuase all the syncro does is match gear speed a fraction before they engage which with wear can cause the gears to not fully match speed and cause your grinding. With lower rpms you can acually match the perfect time in which both gears are rotating and the exact time. Thus allowing you to shift without a clutch. *dont try for the sake of your tranny* So dont be an ass and go shootin your mouth off.

My tranny did the same thing for bout a week or two then it just stop. I guess the fluid had to run threw the tranny for a while...
